Building on the wobbly foundation that was the previous week's episode, The Lying Detective manages to steer the show back on track with a nice little (convoluted) serial killer thriller and some decent twists.

Messy but way better than the last episode. The plot twists are getting a tad ridiculous but it's fun.

The Lying Detective seems a Sherlock episode to distract from the fact that the writers did not really know where to go with this season. All in all however, it's still intriguing and thrilling. Not to mention a very creepy performance from Toby Jones.

Its heavy on the Sherlock outthinks the bad guy outthinking him ad nauseam but still a solid enough piece of entertainment. Toby Jones is brilliantly nasty and got way under my skin, i loved it. He steals the show for sure.

A bit of an improvement over the previous episode in that it flows better and feels more cohesive, and it also has a bunch of really entertaining moments. Even so, it relies a too much on style to cover up flaws in the writing and the actors to make up for the increasingly one-note characterizations.

Another great episode. Interesting plot. Fenomenal performances (Watson's grief is wonderfully played by Freeman). Cumberbatch gives Sherlock so many vulnerabilities. I love that they mentioned The Woman, although I was expecting Sherlock to have gone further than texting in their relationship.

An amazing bounce back from the horribly season opener. Toby Jones gives a nice chilling performance and the writing is sharp.

The show's always been highly stylized, but this week it's just ugly. Large numbers of shots that use only a tiny portion of the frame and leave characters on the very edges of it (and facing off screen). Tries to use style to get into too many different mindsets and comes off as all flash.

I can't help but feel that this show is beginning to lose itself - Double 0 Sherlock in Six Thatchers and a case of the slightly overdramatic this week. While I enjoyed it and it kept me intrigued throughout, and one twist really caught me off guard, it's just not as intricate and slick as it used to be. At times, it feels a bit bloated and drawn out yet also rushed and messy. Don't get me wrong it is good, it's just not quite the same Sherlock for me.
