A faithful but rather joyless adaptation of that old book from high school.

It's a pretty good TV movie. It's nothing amazing but it brought a few of the more interesting parts of the poem to life in an interesting way.

Watched this in high-school because my history teacher was too lazy to teach us about Greek history.

Very much a TV-movie but a good one. Cast is okay, and prone to overacting. Special effects work is impressive, and still looks good to me. I think there is much about the film that is probably very accurately interpreted from the text - a bit camp, general buffoonery and aforementioned 'heightened' acting - leading to a brutish but not aesthetically stupid result. Three hours to adapt this epic and the pacing is also fine. Peter Jackson should see it (and in one moment, you wonder if he has).

A film from my childhood. Holds really well from a 2024 perspective. The magic, the adventure and the heroic telling of this absolute cultural classic are still there, and I had a lot of fun watching this from start to finish. The poor visual effects don't hurt it one bit, but add to the atmosphere. Assante is a great Odysseus. Reading Homer's tale I keep visualising him in my mind. Some scary scenes with the Cyclop (but not so scary as in the book). Didn't like Thelemacus' casting though.

Well-produced adventure saga is inevitably lurchingly episodic, with different sections enjoying different degrees of success; works better during the flesh and blood spectacle scenes than during the dated CGI moments, but served by a well-chosen cast unafraid to go soap opera broad without risking their dignity (admittedly the scenes on the home-front with Scacchi come awfully close). Anchored by rock-solid, brooding hero work from Assante who almost threads this chaotic collage together.

I mean, made for TV, so you have to cut it some slack, but honestly it's pretty shit. Still, with a glaring lack of adaptations, these are the images that always go through my head when I pick up Homer. Which I guess is sad.
