It's got a strong first act driven by intimate yet dreary cinematography and outstanding acting, but it is a Stephen King story... So that means it's 50-50 as to whether it's going to have some truly innovative mythmaking (e.g. Dr. Sleep) or if it's going to degenerate into nonsensical drivel. Unfortunately, it's the latter, but this cinematic incarnation holds together well enough to be watchable enough until the final handful of episodes. Still, there are worse Stephen King stories out there.

a story of "SOMETHING IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN" and nothing ever does

There's some padding in the middle, but it starts and ends strong. Could probably be a full two episodes shorter, if not more. The cast is great; always good to see Paddy Considine, and Cynthia Erivo really impresses.

So far it's a pretty slick procedural police thriller, with just the hints of supernatural mixed in. It's more subtle than the book so far, so pretty much the same story. Digging it. EDIT - slightly lowered score as a few of the mid episodes dragged a bit, but it still is an overall above-average series. Worth a look.

Too long

Beautiful and deliberately built story about how grief touches everything around it and how support and community and connection keeps you moored. A great two-hander between Erivo & Mendelsohn, but I ended up caring about every member of the ragtag group by the end.

Some series hook you from the very first episode, and The Outsider is definitely one of them. With that unmistakable Stephen King stamp, it pulls us into an unsettling story filled with mystery, told at a slow but solid pace. There are no cheap scares or random twists here — everything seeps in gradually, like a nightmare that settles in and refuses to let go. And that, in a miniseries, is quite an achievement. Forced mystery. Couldn't watch more than two episodes.

King and his son both seem intent on remaking IT. This is like the exact same shit. With that beloved King stock character of dude-forced-by-omnipotent-evil-entity-to-move-the-plot-forward. The first two eps are pretty good. I'm glad Jason Bateman is playing more psychos these days. I'd like to see him get as prolific in that as the other thing, which he's taken about as far as it can go. What's he gonna do, remake THE COMEDY? Whoa, yeah, he should remake THE COMEDY, but, like, as Rex Heuermann.

I recently watched Salem's Lot for the first time and even though it's much shorter than this, it suffered from a bloated storyline that worked to capture every minute detail of the book that it could. The Outsider is a more sophisticated adaptation with an approach to serialization. I immediately felt engrossed in this; police investigation procedural meets supernatural shapeshifter. In true King fashion, the climax gets a bit shaky, but I came out of this rather moved.

Strong first two episodes but goes downhill from there. It's too long and the audience always understands what's happening faster than the characters. Holly wackiness clashes with the tone. Ralph realistically remains rational but does nothing to prove his point (like investigating how the footage could have been faked or the DNA planted) and just keeps going along with everything while brooding. Pretty weak ending (underwhelming monster reveal, nonsensical collapsing cave). Good cinematography.

I liked this outside of everything story. Good actors, well build scenes and enough good achieved ending. Did not success all the way though.

The character who knows everything is awesome and the heart of the show
