A student of London's International Film School, Michael Mann began his career in the late 70s, writing for TV shows like "Starsky and Hutch" (1975). He directed his first film, the award-winning prison drama The Jericho Mile (1979) (TV), in 1979. He followed that in 1981 with his first theatrical release, Thief (1981) starring James Caan as a safecracker who falls under the spell of the mob. He followed with The Keep (1983), an adaptation of F. Paul Wilson's novel about a mysterious force within a Nazi fortress. He hit it big in 1984, when he produced and created the long-running TV series "Miami Vice" (1984), which made Don Johnson a household name. He followed that up in 1986 with a disastrous, lesser-known TV series, "Crime Story" (1986), and the superb thriller Manhunter (1986) a precursor of The Silence of the Lambs (1991). He spent the next few years involved in television, directing films like L.A. Takedown (1989) (TV) and producing films like the Emmy-winning "Drug Wars: The Camarena Story" (1990). In 1992, he returned to feature film with the box-office hit The Last of the Mohicans (1992), which starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe.

Tokyo vice would be good if it didn't gave a a western perspective on japanese culture. If it had a Japanese lead, speaking all the time Japanese and didn't have explain Japanese culture and talk down to the audience. Make the police inspector or the newspaper editor the main character, instead of the charisma void that is Ansel Elgort. Spends too much time on chasing storylines that go nowhere.Introduce more plotlines in last two episodes as cliffhangers. So far a bunch of missed opportunities.

Great crime thriller about an American who becomes the first to report for a Japanese newspaper. He becomes involved in a tangle of relationships involving the Japanese mafia AKA as The Yakuza. The different lens offered by Japanese culture and the nuanced interconnecting relationships makes this a great yarn to watch.

Exceptionally executed. The authenticity is evident in every aspect. From the very beginning, the first episode immerses you in the flavors and sounds of Tokyo. Despite this, I was uncertain about giving it a high score because it required a lot of effort to keep track of the Japanese faces and names. But having finished the first season, I must say it was worth the effort. Edit: The second season became less and less interesting untill the end, where boredom reached its climax

I liked season 1, but season 2 is a drag

Score would be higher if the white immigrant (sorry, expat) lead was someone more charismatic than Elgort, or if someone Japanese was the main character. Also, not nearly enough brooding night-time shots of neon cityscapes in a show that hypes its Michael Mann connection.

I found this series extremely intriguing. The Tokyo setting and its aesthetics are the cornerstone of the show. I ended up loving Shô Kasamatsu as Sato, and felt that Ansel Elgort did a great job at portraying a smug journalist. The season was by no means perfect, with some odd issues with dubbing and continuity. Super excited for season 2.

OMG this starts so slow and terribly. You need to give it until episode 3, when it becomes ok. By episode 5 it's fairly interesting. I'm writing this on episode 6 and I've decided it's decent.

I thought Elgort, an actor whose acting I usually don't appreciate, actually acquitted himself pretty well in this bog-standard but entertaining crime thriller show. (1 season)

In the middle of the first season I thought this was flippin' fantastic! But did not end on a high. Still, very hopeful of seeing another season!

Season 1 is great. Everything is so sharp, well built and carefully planned. Season 2 has, so far, fallen off a cliff.

It's nice to see Michael Mann again. He really manages to create an atmosphere of thriller and crime. Normally I'm not an Ansel Elgort fan, I even rate him overrated and I can't say I really liked his performance in Tokyo Vice. It is a very valuable show in terms of learning Japanese culture and getting to know it better. I'm looking forward to the next episodes. My rating may up or down later.
