Everything this movie has to offer is intense. Fast paced, fun, shocking and all around cool. Much better than the original, Infernal Affairs. Script is very tight and has some sweet lines. Acting is top notch and I can't believe they didn't cast Nicholson as a menacing mob boss sooner.

I absolutely love just about everything this movie has to offer. Leonardo DiCaprio catches some flack for being basically a rich pretty boy, but he's a hell of an actor, and this is his best yet. The casting of Nicholson as a crime boss is inspired, and, as would be expected from Martin Scorsese, this movie is technically marvelous. The entire theme of identity only helps to advance a fantastic crime thriller, filled with humor, tension and great moments of sudden violence.

It can't recreate the magic of Infernal Affairs, though it has its charms. Some things took me out of the movie though. Wahlberg's accent sounded more like a chant from a Lovecraft story, and Nicholson's acting is completely ridiculous. Once people started dying in the final act I didn't really care that much. Maybe because I knew what would happen, maybe because the original is a tighter film that used the paranoia angle better.

A great surprise, it almost felt like some of Scorsese's greatest work from his early carreer. The screenplay and direction are both outstanding, which leads to a powerful, amazing movie. And the last 30 minutes are a tour-de-force.

An instant classic, unsurprisingly seeing the cast list and the director. The film is gripping to the extreme and tensions run higher and higher as the movie goes on, thanks to the generally excellent all around acting and the direction of the very experienced Scorsese. As the tensions leads into the last section of the film it literally leaves you dumbfounded, and it's incomprehensible to think where the film might end up going. Even then it goes to places you really wouldn't have expected.

It's nice to Scorsese operating in a genre he's comfortable with. The film is tense, gritty, and gripping, with great performances all around; my only complaint is that the film didn't have the same distinctive elegance and style that elevated Goodfellas. Except for the soundtrack, Departed isn't as obviously a Scorsese film, and while others may like this, I kind of miss it.

A closeted gay man associates himself with an older, closeted bisexual man, but struggles to satisfy a woman, who eventually realises she has allowed herself to be deceived into believing that his career success was enough to mean that he embodied an acceptable version of masculinity. My recollection is that in 2006 no critics acknowledged that this film is about the relationship between sexual orientation, sexual performance, social convention and cultural expectations of fathering sons.

This film ostensibly takes place in Boston, yet I don't think I saw a single garage tattoo or pregnant teenager in the entire movie. The characters are clean, articulate, and entirely too creative with their vulgarity. As a Boston movie, Casey Affleck's older brother's Gone Baby Gone hits closer to reality. But as a Boston gangster fantasy, the kind that gets white Americans excited about their remote Irish heritage and distant relation to Whitey Bulger, it's absolutely sensational.

I really, really enjoyed absolutely every bit of it up to the ending. My complaint with it is not the end result but how quickly it was reached. The movie is over 2 hours long and the ending wraps up the movie in what seems like 5 minutes. It just feels rushed and really left me disappointed. Still, everything up to that point was excellent: the acting, the story, the dialog, everything.

Among Scorsese's great works, regardless of its status as a remake. A visceral and amusing crime story, wherein duplicitous identity games are the playing field of machismo displays... which may in fact be a little gay. And though it operates on dramatic irony, by which the viewer knows what the characters don't, the plot takes unexpected and engaging swerves, and its swift and brutal resolution is antithetical to typical Hollywood formulas.

Easily Scorsese's best since GoodFellas. It's gripping, suspenseful, tight, funny, and just damn good. I really enjoyed it. This is virtuoso editing, maybe even better than Schoonmaker's work on Taxi Driver. It's bold and surprising and greatly adds to the storytelling.

I'm really trying not to rate this too highly (as that tends to happen when you just see a movie), but it was excellent. There wasn't a bad performance in the movie, and DiCaprio really stole the show. Amazing story, interesting characters, and an ending that doesn't disappoint (unless that type isn't your cup of tea). If you like Scorsese, you'll like the Departed.

Wahlberg and DiCaprio are the standouts, delivering the greatest and most mature performances of their respective careers to this point. It's a cat and mouse game as two undercover men within the Mass. state police and the Irish mafia try to discover their enemy's identities. It's Scorsese's re-telling of the Chinese Infernal Affairs, but despite borrowing from the overall storyline it has a look and feel all its own. There are few films in existence with a final 30 minutes as intense as this.

The "plot" develops like this: a man enters a guy's room, says various things about the vagina of the guy's wife, the other talks about the way he's gonna treat his rectum and then they kill each other. Baldwin is ridiculous as usual, Nicholson is spitting on his past, Farmiga is screaming at her anus. What stands out is the very good Mark Wahlberg and the fine score.

I don't care if the film itself is good. Absolutely zero creativity or risk taking involved in making it. Simply rip off a popular Japanese crime drama (many scenes are IDENTICAL to the original), use household name actors, and with Scorsese directing how could this not be a huge hit? You would think that at this point in Scorsese's career that he would have the funding and artistic freedom to fulfill his greatest directorial ambitions, but he instead takes the easy route and banks once again

"The Departed" was a movie whose premise did not measure up to it's length. Once a viewer has determined who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, then the movie just drags along until near the end. They gave him his Oscar for THIS? It's tragic that one of Scorsese's weakest films finally got the honour he deserved for an earlier movie - alas the politics of the Academy Awards. I'll never forget the collective gasps at the big moments, or the hot minute when everyone cheered for Marky Mark. The first half hour is a pretty motley grab-bag (and could've been excised/shortened). But then it tightens up quite a bit...and all cylinders are firing in the acting department (except for Wahlberg, who is notably miscast).
