Yeah, of course this was directed by David Lynch. I went into this expecting nothing, it is G rated disney fluff of course. I was so wrong, this is a touching oddly thrilling in the way riding a mower can be thrillin picture with Lynch's hands all over it but the prints have been wiped clean EXCEPT for that silo shot that is straight from Eraserhead. I am gonna ostracize my brothers for decades so I can experience the feelings I felt during this again because that's how it works.

The film is very slow, but it's to be expected when the subject is an old man riding his lawn mower across a state. It really works well and is surprisingly captivating and, while it's not your standard Lynch film, it has enough little strange moments to give it a unique feel.

Normally I will take points off from a movie for being slow. I couldn't do that with The Straight Story. The whole idea of the movie was moving at a slow and steady pace. This film was just wonderful. Richard Farnsworth is literally the cutest old man. This movie made me love the Midwest and America in general. This was based on a true story and it's nice to know that someone would travel so far to make up with a family member and the people Alvin meets on the way are so helpful and nice.

Despite what everyone says, I found it a very typical Lynch film with its symbolic imagery/soundscapes & offbeat characters. He was always best at blending surreal with every-day & is quite seamless here. It takes place in the same universe as most of his work & pours from the same emotional place. Actors are all believable & carry the film nicely. It's a bit heavy handed though and there's a sense that Lynch needed to get this out of his system since his Twin Peaks was prematurely scrapped.

I caught this movie on TNT on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I believe it was sandwiched between some Jean Claude or Stallone movies so I was obviously unprepared for how good it was. Its just a story, a good one, about a man who wants to repair a relationship and goes about it the only way he knows how. I about lost it when I noticed who the directer was.

Lynch often portrays the elderly as nightmarish figures of disillusionment by viewing them through the anxious gaze of a younger subject. Here we see him operate from the vantage point of the old; where the function of a dream has faded away and with it all of the trivial anxieties of youthfulness. What remains is simple wisdom, the final days of pride, and the importance of reconciliation. This is essential Lynch.

Very sweet and heartfelt. Another film which deserves credit for sparking my interest in film as a medium, and not just as a vehicle for entertainment. The relative lack of a conventional narrative structure and its minimalistic composition really struck me as something different and special. I saw this in the ninth grade, and although I lacked the film vocabulary to express exactly what I loved about it, I recall being thoroughly enamored with it.

Nearly no other film has a comparable mood. I love the shot where the camera shows Straight slowly driving on a road with his lawn mower and then the camera pans to the side, shows clowds slowly drifting by and then pans back to show Straight just a few meters from his previous position. Great cinematography.

A nice feel-good piece (even though it feels weird to say this about a Lynch movie) on a guy who is very inspiring and likable in his endeavor to reach to his brother. It has great scenery, the Alvin Straight character was handled by Farnsworth amazingly and even though in the beginning it felt like Badalamenti got lazy and just made a spin-off of the Twin Peaks theme, it has an amazing soundtrack. All in all it is a nice experience.

One of the most moving films I've ever seen. It irritates me that people act like this couldn't have come from Lynch, as if the man is only capable of filming brutal violence and midgets from parallel dimensions or something. In fact, it's a trademark Lynch film, just bereft of those more potentially off-putting elements. As a side note, just look at those utterly gorgeous, wonderfully slow dissolves that he uses to separate practically every scene. Beautiful filmmaking in a beautiful film.

Farnsworth is incredible. His sad eyes and regular trembles of his face tell the story of Alvin Straight's pain and long-standing demons. These get slowly revealed through meeting strangers on his journey but his mannerisms lay the expectation of something beneath the surface from the beginning. It's a fine movie about the troubles within family and each vignette along the way helps expand that theme.

The film's novelty comes from watching Lynch tackle a tame subject and using standard genre conventions to do it, but once the initial charm wears off, it really settles into formula filmmaking. The movie is well done, though; Lynch resists schmaltz except when it goes beyond simple pathos, and his signature offbeat humor and wacky (yet believable) characters carry the film beyond its familiar trappings. It's an above average biopic with some unconventional underpinnings keeping its pace up.

David Lynch's unexpectedly intensely sentimental The Straight Story doubles both as a tale of redemption and an empathetic and fair tribute to a more conservative era gone past, as reflected by one of many men who define it. Though as predictable as you'd expect, very relaxed, natural dialogue and performances, an excellent score from Badalamenti, and most importantly good humor are enough to bring honesty to the exceedingly good nature of the film. Actually one of Lynch's best.

Images of rurality combined with a pleasant story to produce a relaxing, heartwarming and charming film. It's nothing like his other work and I was amazed at just how well it worked. Badalamenti's score is also fitting. There's not much to say other than it does exactly what you would expect.

Great look at Midwest values that doesn't belittle or put it on a pedestal. It just is what it is. And I hate to narrow it down to this too, but it has all the true Lynch hallmarks: camera movement, sense of humor, morals, acting styles and other touches.

A nice little film, as simple a story as you could dream up but it shows you really don't need that much to make a film work. It succeeds thanks to Farnsworth's performance, the music, and the vast empty sections of time and space which allow the film to wax poetic and philosophical about life, memories, family, and the process of growing old. There is no high concept emotional twist as an ending, but the film's conclusion still has plenty of impact.

Slow, very restrained shots and dissolves representing the leisurely passage of time out in the country. It's said to be the least Lynchian of Lynch's offerings, and yet I can still feel it, especially in the character interactions and sound design. However, everything just feels too clean and simple for what it's supposed to be: a desperate weeks-long trek across vast emptiness.

Most road movies are about the protagonist being changed by their experience on the road. The Straight Story is about the denizens along the road being changed by the protagonist (and, by extension, the audience is changed by the experience of riding with Alvin). Told in a leisurely episodic fashion, the effect is cumulative. Gradually, we come to understand more, to appreciate more, until the beauty is so great it overwhelms the heart.

A welcome rarity putting the spotlight on old people, of a particular generation which Lynch has a lot of reverence for. Somewhat of a turning point in Lynch's filmography, a welcome respite between the madness of Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. But don't be fooled, this is still an idiosyncratic work, about on the same level of lynchiness as The Elephant Man.

Walt Disney presents...A David Lynch film? Weird pairing, but it worked out well. It's pretty unbelievable how much Farnsworth looks like the real Alvin Straight, nice casting. I like how the pacing of the film is married to how Alvin travels. The ending left me wanting more, it just seemed too anti-climatic. Not one of Lynch's best but still worth watching. You should also fast forward through the 911 joke in the beginning, god that was painful.

Marvelously simple story about an old man who wants to go see his brother that he has been estranged from for 10 years. This is a very slow moving story that reveals bits and pieces of his life and shares a little wisdom with us. A likable fellow on a great quest. If you like action, this movie is not for you, instead this is a methodically slow story that somehow keeps the viewer interested. I liked it, probably because Richard Farsnworth is such a great and likeable character.

As 'straight' as Lynch gets. A quaint and warm story that I feel harsh in faulting, but for all that's wonderful about it, I think it loses steam at around two thirds in. Nor does it fully escape sentimentality; and while the ending is touching and sensitively portrayed, it closes rather abruptly. As anti-Lynchian as this comes across though, the man still indulges in some token quirks; they charm rather than unsettle, and we're all the better for it.

If I hadn't read his name in the credits, I would never have guessed this was a David Lynch film. It's actually a really lovely movie. It's a fairly typical road movie, in a way - he meets a bunch of different people along the way, and in the end, it's all about the journey, not the destination. It was the lead actor, Richard Farnsworth's last role before he died, and he's fantastic. I was also really impressed by Sissy Spacek's performance and I liked Harry Dean Stanton's small appearance too.

Plotless slice-of-life stories are quite often the best stories out there, but this one tries to mold its story into a more traditional blockbuster movie trajectory, and I don't think it always works. The overwhelming charm throughout the whole thing helps, though.

"The Straight Story" couldn't be more perfectly titled, as it is by far the most straightforward work by David Lynch. Nostalgic, sentimental and led by an exceptional, heart-breaking performance by the late Richard Farnsworth, this is a slow-paced but rewarding road-trip film with a solid script, stunning images and a poignant ending. Lynch achieves a superbly subdued mood as we are shown the protagonist's various, often weird and sometimes moving encounters as he treks through the countryside.

A pure and simple masterpiece; Lynch's now-legendary stab at a G-rated film presented by Disney (!) finds him in peak form as a film-maker, using his distinctive odd-ball tracking shots sparingly and allowing the chief focus to be on Farnsworth's magnetic and mesmerising performance. Spacek fares almost as well, with Badalamenti's haunting and wistful score a beautiful capper. An irresistible, uncharacteristically sympathetic portrait of Lynch's favourite small-town America.

The Straight Story is such a beautifully written and presented history of realizing that we need to appreciate our loved ones when they are still around us. It moves at a slow pace, which is fitting for the vehicle Alvin uses to get to his brother. It takes time to show us the journey and allows us to get to know both Alvin as well as the people he meets along the way. I could watch this again just to relax and enjoy the trip.

A film on the lenient road regulations of flyover states. Lynch can do sentimental very well, but that's when it's contrasted with his brand of surrealism -- existing on its own (like in The Elephant Man as well), the whole thing falls short. Alvin is a very typical old man character, meek, wise, and a tad clumsy, but nothing we haven't seen before. The supporting cast are equally as stock, though Spacek's stutter-y daughter character is particularly off-putting. Uninteresting and unedifying.

there's a shot where Lynch shows a grain silo, humming an ominous noise, and then we're shown the father and daughter bonding over a night hearing the silo working.
