Obviously Netflix's attempt at making their own Game of Thrones ("More boobs! More blood! More swears! We have to show we're serious!"), but it thankfully ends up being its own thing. The nonlinear storytelling of the first season could have been handled better, and I'm still not sold on some of the casting choices, but the end product is never less than watchable. Interested to see where they take it next. UPDATE: They ruined it. Typical.

I ended up enjoying this, but holy fuck is it all over the place structurally and narratively. More often bemusing than anything else, I spent several hours a day pondering what the fuck ‘The Law of Surprise’ really means. It slowly won me over somehow. A mess, but an interesting one. Desperately needs reigning in for a second season.

Made me all existential: I kept asking myself, "I know I don't really watch TV like I used to... maybe this is actually good TV and I don't know what makes good TV anymore? Or is it meh TV and I'm being misled by The Algorithm?" Thank you, Criticker, for affirming the latter, proving the worth of *your* algorithm, and leading me gently away from the edge of yet another mild existential crisis.

An interesting world, but mighty messy and confusing for those without prior experience with the series (books/games). Could use more lore/historical backstory and clear indication of timeline jumps. It all came together somewhat in the end, but for the first half of season 1 it's hard to tell "when" certain things are happening. Despite all the problems, its popularity gives hope that a bigger budget will lead to better results in follow-up seasons.

Solid but flawed Dark Fantasy series based on the books by Sapkowski which also spawned the successful video game series. While it's no Game of Thrones, and it doesn't have to be, it does seem to lack certainty of what it is trying to be in it's first season, veering from mature dark themes, action adventure, political drama, horror fantasy to cringe inducing humour regularly. Hopefully the feedback from viewers will help them settle down and find the right rhythm of the show in S2.

Nilfgaard is for losers. I only travel to Milf-gaard, and if a Witcher doesn't protecter her from my 'monster' we might have a Child Surprise. Maybe I'm reading the show wrong thinking a Witcher is a metaphor for a condom, but I feel pretty confident. Why else would the Witcher protecting the Child Surprise be a central plotline? How many fucking times can you seriously say Child Surprise before I start reading to much into it show? Huh? Tell me again, dramatically, about the Child Surprise.

The story runs on three seperate lines and while I enjoyed most of the screen time when the protagonist was present, most of the show isn't about him at all. Instead we focus on a strange young woman who just keeps running in the forest and politics. Lots of politics concerning countries we don't know anything about, so I couldn't care less. On the cover Witcher is a very appealing show to fantasy fans, but it fails to deliver. Overall a botched opportunity to show something truly spectacular.

This thrives on cavill's unexpectedly great performance, while most of the other cast sucks balls. Chalotra looks like a background dancer in a second rate RnB-video, not like a classy, timeless sorceress. Well, boobs, i guess, but heck, they had buring at hand, why not take her?! The "dunkirk"-schtick is neat, but it might get pretty confusing to people who go in blindly. Could've done with a lot more monster hunting, though. Hm.

Time is a foreign concept here. Jumps forward and backward by decades with no indication of doing so. Very confusing and poorly laid out, even with a familiarity of and fondness for the source material.

As someone who played all the games but hasn't read any of the source material, I still ended up super confused at times as to what I was watching and who someone was. That being said it's a hell of a lot of fun at times and I really did enjoy Cavill and will watch a second season just to see more.

The Witcher did not meet my low expectations. It completely misses the point of the novels: a thinly veiled Polish tradesman dealing with ethics of his trade and how he gets inescapably involved in political powers who see him and his friends as expendable pieces on a chessboard. And I will also dispel this notion right away: Henry Cavill sucks along with everyone else. Just because he can do an impression of video game Geralt doesn't make him good for the role. Season 3 update: I told you so.

Campy but fun fantasy. High production value, good acting for the genre, great CGI, fantastic action choreography, gaping plot holes. It couldn't quite decide whether it wanted to drive a main story forward or do a serialised monster-of-the-week. I expect this to get much better in coming seasons.

S1: Generic fantasy elevated by darker European quirkiness, a big budget, and strong lead actors. It can be janky in places but that jankiness is what distinguishes the brand. Dialogue needs improvement. Some of the nudity is superfluous and distracting. The show benefits a lot from Yennefer's backstory, Ciri's journey is a chore, and Geralt's tale falls somewhere in the middle. S2: shows more sureness and restraint (+) while becoming a more Western product (-). Too many narrative contrivances.

Before I read the books, I thought that the first couple of seasons were decent, and that the third one was a bit of a mixed bag. Having read the books I still maintain the first couple of seasons are OK. And that Henry Cavill is so good that he IS Geralt. But starting with third season, I can also say the producers of the show are idiots. I mean the books are gold, such strong material, and what do they do? Piss all over it in good old US production fashion. Read the books.

The problem with the Witcher is not the action or the background fantasy lore. The problem is that it is all over the place thematically, structurally, and emotionally. It suffers from trying to do too much in too little time. The emotional punches don't feel like anything because there is no quality time spent on character development. At this point, I've accepted the show is not great but will continue watching just to see Geralt kick butt with the villains' jaws on the floor in shock

Dialogue is occasionally weak, but other times it shines & every other aspect of the show is solid gold, on par with GoT but lighter, funnier & more idealistic. Shockingly much better than the books, due to the expansion of Yennifer’s backstory, and greater emphasis on Cirila, Tis & Tris. Much less of a bro fest. Women (everyone) heroes in the series actually *are* strong—not just luckily/magically, but through hard work, tenacity, willpower & courage. Vulnerable & nuanced. S2’s even better.

I had low expectations for the first season but I was pleasantly surprised. As confusing as it is to watch the first time around, it all comes together well enough in the end. I think it's worthy of a second watch, that way you get a better understanding and appreciation of the timeline. Effects were solid until the last few episodes they has some faults, the acting from Henry was amazing, the supporting cast did well enough to engage me and keep me entertained. I like it a lot.

It's got some suave and cool sword-fighting scenes with a mostly emotionless Henry Cavill, plus a shit ton of tits. Basically prime binge-watching TV. The plot is a bit confusing and that is kinda a turnoff as it almost requires you to think too hard about something that you'd prefer was more straight forward. I'm writing this having only seen the first season, so my score might drop after I watch the 2nd.

(TV) Really enjoyable! Give S1 a few more eps than usual, since there's a bunch of chronological fuckery that is not particularly easy to follow to begin with, but does show them taking the worldbuilding seriously. More than hits its stride mid-way through. Fun characterisation, monster-of-the week framing and lavish budget. I also appreciate the languid, dense pacing of the plot. Maybe a few too many fringe chars in S2 but core exploits remain unmissable, top-tier entertainment. |S1:77 S2:77

I think this show takes a little too long to get started. I loved the first episode and then got bored over the next couple as it just felt like I was watching a gamer play the game doing "side quests", as nothing the Witcher was doing seemed important to the plot. The female leads were more interesting at that point, until Geralt met Yennefer, then things started to get interesting, and I loved the rest of the season from there. Anya Chalotra does a great job as well.

(fyi: I have never played the games) I felt like this was between Game of Thrones and a teen fantasy drama--not that this is a bad thing. I liked the more feminist vibe of the show (or at least that it is exploring female characters). The one criticism I have is that sometimes the narrative goes back in time without making it obvious that it did so, leaving me super confused as to what is going on until my boyfriend let me know that we're in the past now. I am hoping it gets better next season!

It's 2020, I think it's time we stop humpback shaming. Cavill is great but the rest of the cast is a mixed bag erring on the side of weak and/or forgettable. The Ciri storyline is completely mishandled and any scene following her is a slog to get through. The timeline is extremely muddled, and the show in general is quite messy. The action is well handled, though there could certainly be more of it. Bring on season 2 with hope for improvement. #stophumpbackshaming

The Witcher is a fun time, with great actions scenes. It isn’t very good quality wise though. Cavill based his voice off of the games, which is why it sounds like he’s voice acting. He looks solid in the role, but it takes time to get past how unnatural his voice is at times. The script varies from decent to awful, with occasional dialogue to take you out of the story, and lots of flashbacks and confusing moments. Directing is fine, but nothing great (aside from action). Not good, but fun.

??EP1+2 only: 2nd Far better. •Maybe book dictates plot but show jumps EP1 into brutal battles & ‘tragic' deaths it (unlike GoT) did nothing to earn yet -> No emotional connect 2 events. BUT ? Marketplace fight kinetic & interestingly shot, sad ? death of most charismatic actor in EP1! Geralt: gruff & stoic so Diff 2 quickly connect with. Show needs charismatic support & EP2?: Bard -> levity ??? + Yennifer adds interest & plot •Beats Shannara, sub Britannia, GoT

Second and third seasons were a pretty big improvement over the first, if only because they got over that timelines gimmick plot introduction. Basically it's about a 75 whenever Cavill's on screen fucking up a monster or guys with swords, and slightly below a passing grade when it's not. Overall I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's not into the video games or books, especially with Cavill getting replaced by a lesser Hemsworth at the end of S3 (at which point I dropped the show).

I've enjoyed the world-building, characters and casting. Everything legit on those parts. But had issues ranging from moderate to huge with the set pieces, editing, pacing, dialogue and the CGI. Especially since the press having tromboned the series as a rival to GoT. It is MIND BOGGLING that the Witcher costs 10 mil á episode whilst GoT was around 6-8 mil. Dialogue is expositionary and clunky. Sometimes unintentionally hilarious like in ep 1 with the wizard. But Henry Cavill is godsend.

I had a lot of fun with this. Gets a lot of points for unapologetically being high fantasy. Works best when it follows a procedural "monster of the week" format. The main story is the lesser part of this, feeling more like something you need to get through to get to all the good stuff with grumpy old Geralt (Cavill is great!) on his adventures. Cinematography and direction is a little lacking and most of the acting is charmingly earnest in a CW kind of way. Looking forward to more of this.

Apart from the Yennefer role, the acting is good. Especially Henry Cavill's performance is very good. It's a good show to have a good time, but they didn't introduce worlds much. The CGI in the first episodes is weak. Then it's getting a little better. For those who do not read books, this series is poorly described.Good for those who read the books.
