Some say that Tron's special effects are dated but I disagree. Tron takes place in the 80's and, at the time, these special effects are what the best computers in the 80's had to offer. The virtual world certainly does have it's own distinct visual style. With all that said the plot itself is pretty thin and even though the film is only an hour and a half it does feel like it could've been shorter. Still worth seeing for the special effects though.

Gets off to a rough start and the acting is pretty bad at parts, and would benefit from more running time and a different pacing, but it's fun. There's some wonderfully endearing escapism in the cheesy psychedelia of the computer world. The plot is simple, but it's sometimes nice to watch something straightforward and simple with a triumphant ending. Not exceptional, but a nice experience overall.

Wooden characters and poor dialogues aside, this was actually a fun trip of pure escapism, featuring an immersive digital world of boundless creativity, though why name the movie after a supporting character ? I guess "Tron" sounded better than "Flynn"...

Surprisingly awesome! Once inside the system the uneven acting is smoothed by the circuitry suits, while the solid internal logic compensates for the sparse plot. Even the chunky CGI comes off as endearing when coupled with the zippy projectiles and bikes. Of course the designs are the star attraction: vibrant, streamlined and inventive. Quite the triumph of early computer immersion, not to mention damn fun.

Makes no apologies about its desire 2 get 2 its then-groundbreaking computerized world as soon as possible & stay there. That world still holds up thanks 2 its unique aesthetic & seamless anthropomorphizations of computer concepts: a good thing since there's only the barest bones of plot and character, literally just enough 2 explain who's who & get things rolling. There's hints of a love triangle which rn't so much brushed aside as ignored, but I'm guessing Disney didn't want 2 confuse the kids

Dull and listless tech fantasy may have possibly played better in its own time, when its effects (and notions of computers and the internet) were not so horribly dated, but the flat, convoluted and confusing plot inside the VR world (not to mention its hideously ugly production design and characters) make this a tough slog almost from the start. An epic battle between Bridges and Warner should be a pop culture landmark, but this film even strips these iconic guys of their personalities!

So this is complete and utter gibberish. The VFX are groundbreaking, obviously, but it would have been nice if they were in service of a script that wasn't written by a random number generator picking words from a computing textbook. Also would have been nice to have a score from someone like Tangerine Dream instead of whichever wannabe John Williams wrote the existing music.

It goes without saying that the effects are horribly outdated. In fact, watching them today, they are mindnumbingly hideous. But, somehow, they're part of the movie's charm. I couldn't help but commend how ambitious the movie was, in the face of technology that clearly wasn't ready to pull off the digital world properly. Nevertheless, I find this slightly more entertaining than the sequel.

The plot is bad to the extreme, but it's very ahead of it's time in pretty much every way. While the animation may be bad by today's standard this is obviously an incredibly impressive film visually considering when it was made. Also, some of the effects (lighting of the suits and other stuff) are still very impressive by today's standard. Something about this is just very enjoyable. Badly written and badly acted however, so it's only good enough. Worth a watch.

Looking at this movie's place 25 years ago it'd have been a strange, perhaps even slightly liberating experience. It's very distinct. The CGI looked fairly advanced, and almost a first on this scale. The acting is very bland, but the whole theme is semi-worthwhile 'computers thinking for and more than the men who created them' and it has more relevance in today's society than they ever would have assumed at the time! I felt it was a little unconvincing and driven by its gimmick all said, though.

Tron is that one movie where the utter wealth of nostalgia it has for me overwhelms any actual flaws it has. I enjoy watching it every bit as much as I did when I was 4. There will never be another picture that has even remotely similar style or plot.

A pretty unique movie with a very particular visual taste that has not been done again since. The main concept, an anthropomorphized internal computer world with its own life is great in itself; but what they did with it visually with relatively meager means is crazy. It is like watching a nice piece of history; a way of looking at the world that is gone now as our understanding of graphics went another way, it is a philosophical experience in that aspect.

This comes from that wonderful period when Disney was making genuinely weird movies. Tron is flawed, packed full of adventure-movie cliches, but is also full of moments of strange and surreal beauty capped off by one of the most perfectly ironic final shots ever.

I've seen this film twice now, once as a child and now again as a adult, and both times I found the plot confusing and difficult to follow, a complaitn which might be fine for a Lynch or Malick film, but inexcusable for a Disney-made Action-adventure film. The Production Design still is absolutely on-of-a-kind though, and there truly is no other film that looks like this (including the sequel) and so for that it might be worth your time.

An example of where the visual design came first and the 'story' was simply an excuse to make it. Despite it being completely time bound, this is a singular visual experience, and much effort went into the conceptual world building; the digital vistas are often striking and memorable, and the use of diagonal lines and negative space borders on abstraction. A shame then that the plot is merely a previs style outline in comparison.

gets major brownie points for being one of the first movies with computer animation, but computer animation gets dated about every three years these days, and this was twenty-eight years ago. that aside it's a pretty great kids flick full of action and adventure, so it's definitely worth a watch on that merit alone.

Strongly reminiscent of the dimly lit arcades I spent as much time in as possible when I was a kid. Also, it's kind of neat to go back and see how little actual CG there is, when most people tend to assume that the entire movie is just riddled with it - that's a testament to the cleverness of the special effects and lighting guys, I guess.

Tron came out (5 years) after Star Wars, with Disney money ($5m more) yet looks considerably worse, but kudos for trying something so different. Visually, the scenes in the senior executive's office look the most futuristic, while he "in-game" scenes are seem to be composed of glowing blocks. Probably innovative for its time, it looks quite dated now. The plot isn't bad, just a little under-developed. Bridges seems to be having fun, and at least Tron: Legacy came out of it.

Inescapably corny and dated from a modern viewing, with no real memorable dialogue beyond "end of line," but the filmmaking and visual style has so much raw, bizarre creativity to it that it remains a captivating experience. After seeing so many movies in life I didn't think I'd ever see something that looked TRULY unique, but it turns out that not only did such a film exist, it was made years before I was born! Fancy that.

It might have looked great in 1982, but I doubt anyone would have been too impressed with the content, that is to say the lack of it. The movie makes no pretensions of having the main story be anything else than an excuse to get the viewer in to the virtual world as soon as possible. Sadly, the virtual world is just that and hides behind the special effects.

Top badass moment? It looks like the original BattleZone, the only computer game I was ever actually good at. Like Teletubbies and the Magic Roundabout, this is a film only stoned students and those under ten can truly appreciate. With a plot weaker than a Magikarp and characters so thin they'd give Sir Bob nightmares, the only reason to watch it now is to hear the cool motorbike engine sounds; and see Captain Sheridan before he was commander of Babylon 5. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Obviously I watched this 28 years too late, but I recognize the originality of basing a film on this much CG already back then. As I had been told, the lightcycle battle scene on the grid is pretty awesome; even when having seen Tron Legacy first. But the outfits and scenery must have looked just as laughable back in '82 as they do now. The story works pretty well, especially compared to the sequel (which probably would have benefited from being an actual remake, instead a remake/sequel mix).

Almost as captivating as I remembered it as a kid. Yes, the CG is premature, the plot is bumpy at best and the scene structure is a bit heavy on the Star Wars inspirations in terms of both visual and auditive matters. But nonetheless Tron offers a truly original and elevating adventure ride - that stands the test of time way better than I could have ever imagined.

Sehr trashig und bisweilen auch erstaunlich hässlich (die Gesichter in den Computerszenen) und komischer Musikuntermalung. Manchmal hatte ich das Gefühl, manche Szenen wurden zu Schwarz/Weiß-Film-Zeiten gedreht. Die Geschichte ist nicht nur hanebüchen, sondern auch lächerlich. Erstaunlich ernst nimmt sich der Film auch noch, ich zählte 3 Gags (bis auf Pac-Man als Übersichtskarte, das war super).

The best thing about this film is its special effects. The computer graphics and general visual effects are very impressive for the time. The film itself is fairly simple and conventional (not to mention cheesy and with lame dialogue), being at least partly aimed at a younger audience. However, it does have some adult themes, including a nice religion allegory.

Tron ends up working quite well, although to get full enjoyment out of it, you'll need to be okay with computer jargon, dated visuals and a lack of focus on the plot and characters. I was, and ended up with an enjoyable adventure film about a man in a strange world who needs to save the day. It's not a perfect film, but I can definitely see how it became a cult classic and why it has incredibly devoted fans. If you're a fan of video games or like adventure films, you'll have fun.

I didn't grow up with Tron. I didn't end up watching Tron until I was in my twenties but there is something about this movie that just speaks to me. I love cyberpunk esthetics and even though this isn't cyberpunk there is enough 80's and computer Sci-fi throughout to make it an honorary member of the cyberpunk film cannon. The graphics hold up well for a 40 year old film. The casting is great. There were some weak moments scrip-wise but since it's a kid movie from the 80's, let's give it a pass.

Time, it seems, can take its toll on a piece of work! While 'Tron' is, in terms of writing and directing, a good 80s-style fun ride, in context, this film looks like nothing more than an early low-tech pre-vis cobbled together for Disney executives in preparation for Tron: Legacy. Interesting to see that Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner have improved dramatically over the years as well as the effects!!

The special effects are obviously dated but have enough charm that they're an acceptable backdrop. The real problem is a story that's all about a concept which is neither well fleshed out in the narrative nor interesting enough as a thought experiment. Still kind of fun, but it feels really empty and the ending is appropriately terse.

Aside from the visuals (mind-blowing then, still pretty neat now) and Jeff Bridges being goofy and not giving a shit about anything, the plot made zero sense, the editing is atrocious (no sense of where everything is to each other spacially), and the pacing and writing is so awful that things happen for no reason: love triangles (?) appear then are abandoned, characters are randomly introduced, and the logic is ludicrous. SHITS BAD.

A rather old-fashioned but interesting, even absorbing sci-fi adventure. However, although back then it made a difference as it was something new, "TRON" remains a common action movie nonetheless. Its plot is conventional, the dialogues stilted and the development predictable.

The motorbike scene was as impressive as it was 27 years ago! But the story's got worse and worse every minute looking in the end like the final of Matrix trilogy. And I'm not going to talk about the ludicrous main plot.

This was a pretty good movie. Even though the effects weren't all that great, you have to give them credit for this movie. I really liked that they chose Jeff Bridges for the main part.

Thank the users for such a trippy movie! I will tell you one thing, next time a blow up a video game character, I might actually wonder if I just sent a computer program to it's death. I thought this was definitely a fun film and was visually very beautiful and had some really nice effects for when it came out. This came out at the same time as Blade Runner but I thought it had much better CGI available. Probably because of all the crazy Disney cash available to them. I loved this movie.

I love "Tron" because I have so many fond memories of this film, but after re-watching it, it is not as a great as I thought it was when I first saw it. Even though the CGI is out dated, I still have a soft spot for it. The light cycles are awesome, and I would not mind seeing a sequel to "Tron".

Compare with the new sci-fi movies...well... But the story was very original. Also the style is very original and i think that you can't see something similar around. It's absolutly to see!!!
