Watching this with the Odorama card is a treat. Everything has this weird synthetic smell, but the gross things are really gross. What I like about Waters is that his Dreamlanders are odd, but it never feels exploitative. He handles everything with a camp sensibility that feels uniquely John Waters.

I'm kind of glad this was tame. I've been afraid to go into Waters filmography because of the horrors within.

Given his encyclopedic knowledge of real-world bizarreness, Waters is 1 of the world's great raconteurs. But his fiction is 1note vulgarity. The bratty abuse he heaps on Divine here& the distractingly bad "acting" from co-stars throughout can only amuse the sober 4 so long (about 10 mins) b4 becoming tiresome. & though Odorama's a fun idea, the card almost never smells like what's on the screen. Inexcusably, the worst thing he offers2 smell is skunk. At least SMELLING shit would've been a change

Waters in fullest blossom before he went south. With the Baltimore foot stomper, Francine and Cuddles consoling themselves over cake, and the surly Mr. Fishpaw. Four extra "rad" points for the cool, off-hand manner Tab Hunter had when chucking a severed head into a dumpster.

originally filmed in "odourama", where you got a scratch and sniff card. I really wish I could see this film with one... As usual, everyone does a fantastic jobwith special note to Divine & Tab Hunter

A fine, enjoyable John Waters wacky comedy, but not nearly the best or most outrageous of his Divine and Edith Massey vintage.

Very funny dark comedy starring the fabulous Divine. Too bad I couldn't watch it in Odorama . Also, respect for Tab Hunter :)

Diluted and pedestrian when compared to Waters' movies of the 70s. Worst of all, it's boring. :[

I'm at a point in my life where seeing someone get ridiculously and endlessly heaped with active gleeful maliciousness seems to be both hilarious and relatable, which does make Divine here a worthwhile and sympathetic main character. The smell-o-rama gimmick was surprisingly well utilised, particular at the film's ending where it shows the cleansing effect of store-brand perfumes -- I wish I had one of those cards.

Gave me the biggest laughs from Waters yet. The more restrained approach actually works; I guess sometimes less is more.

The weakest of his prime offerings, but still plenty choice. I think its funny people find it so much more tolerably tame than his earlier work, as its less gross but a good bit meaner-spirited. Feels like watching Waters go Troma a few years before Troma even saw it's mid-80s rise.

Minus 35 points for not having the scratch and sniff so I could smell an old man's farts.

Seems to be not a favourite among Waters’ fans but this one vibes with me more than any of his other ones (except Cecil b demented) I’ve seen. A riot. A deconstruction

Waters's first mainstream feature is wacky middle-class satire. Vincent Peranio's sets are hilariously hideous. Released in "Odorama" -- with audience members given scratch-and-sniff cards.

Is Dexter Ill Today? / Why no, Mr. Kirk, Dexter's in School / I'm afraid he's not, Miss Fishpaw. Dexter's truancy problem is way out of hand. The Baltimore Academy Board have decided to expel Dexter from the entire public school system / But Mr. Kirk, I'm upset as usual of Dexter's truancy, but surely expulsion is not the answer! / I'm afraid expulsion is the only answer. It's the opinion of the entire staff that Dexter is criminally insanesanesanesane

At times, POLYESTER is every bit as good as PINK FLAMINGOS--and, in fact, is more smoothly made, more ambitious, and is a fairly scathing view of how cruel people can be. But therein lies the problem: Francine's sufferings are so intense that they often become genuinely painful to watch; that Divine gives it his all once again only makes the pain worse. Still, for fans of Waters' style, there's plenty to enjoy here; chaos, grotesquerie, cartoonish violence, drug abuse, and of course, weird sex.

Intentionally of not, it induces a rather philosophical state of mind in the viewer. What makes us spend our precious time watching movies and even pay for that? Good acting, interesting story, big screen, surround sound, 3D? Polyester has none. It has Odorama: is't it the most (or maybe the least) subtle joke on the technological progress in cinema? Polyester fascinates with its total and desperate emptiness. It's a lonely sad retarded child of a movie that no other movies want to play with.

Filmed in Odorama, Waters's bid for mainstream commercial success lacks the harsh edges of his earlier work, but manifests a surprising amount of satiric bite.
