It looks absolutely stunning. The dialogue however is at times too artificial for it become engaging emotionally.

Nixon pulls out all the stops in, and the thematically dark and therefore occasionally draining film looks really good.

Davies images here are so expressive and so beautifully lit. They complement the narrative well, drawing out feeling even as they darken as Dickinson's world darkens. And the script is quite good, filled with sharp wit and even sharper retorts.

The slow pace won't be for everyone, but the emotions portrayed are not ones I've seen in many other movies, and certainly not this powerfully.

Goes from mild to weirdly disturbing. Not for the restless. Nixon and Ehle are ace.

might be underrating, but on this viewing some of the dialogue and acting didn't work for me and took me out of it. will rewatch after going through davies filmography.

Davies has one of the best color palettes in the game. The scenes in the gardens are quite stunning. I know it's a terrible cliche but a lot of these shots are painterly. This isn't dull, it's just a slow burn where almost every scene has this depressive aching.

A reasonably complex portrait of a conflicted but great artist who was ignored in her own time due to her gender and unorthodox style. Davies never romanticises her suffering, or her solitide, which reaches truly despairing levels as her resentment deepens and sickness takes hold. Nixon's strength is surprising, and her total commitment to the role almost compensates for the deficiencies in Davies' writing and his rather stagy presentation, which simultaneously heightens and flattens the drama.

Dry, detached, and pretty hard to get into.

My first Davies picture and it didn't disappoint. Some of the dialogue while being funny in a witty way is a bit of a piss off(stunted high class pseudo Brit shit) but everything else about this film is gorgeous. Like I'm sure a million other said the colours in this rule. Loved the way the light colours are framed. Rare to have the biopic interest displayed the way Dickinson is. You can relate sure but maybe you shouldn't be..

the depth of perspective that engenders immortal art paradoxically, tragically prevents the artist from living. "alone in her rebellion", ED sees too deeply into the nature of the game and can't bring herself to play it, contorting with resentment toward those who can. this insight penetrates beyond the social; davies' palette captures her obsession with light, the way its shadows darken and lengthen over time. as damnation approaches, her spunky hollywood wit is gradually, chillingly poisoned.

A Quiet Passion is an impressive film visually, but aside from a few key moments- its an absolute chore to sit through. Its too stoic and depressing to elicit a response from the viewer, and can only be commended for its dedication to the story.

I have to assume award voters are not watching Davies' movies. Either that, or they are dumb, blind and deaf. Quite literally.

Emotionally very far away, visually very impressive. Dark, melancholic, slow pacing, little disturbing especially at the end. It's difficult to understand how a director shoots a brilliant scene and immediately after that a poor one. Wonderful ideas, brave attempt and not a great result. Still worth watching.
