Indian angle was unnecessary. Nicely directed.

There are a lot of tangled histories in this drama about the tricky, tremulous structures of families and the ways that the past can reassert itself in the most unexpected ways. Bier has a finely tuned sense of how people push against one another when they're at their most vulnerable and desperate. She lets scenes play out in unsparing, wrenching fashion. She also has a few unfortunate visual affections that dress up the action unnecessarily, especially a penchant for extreme close-ups on eyes.

I had doubts coming into it, and parts played off like a Soap Opera, but it really shows just what stellar acting can do to a mediocre script.

~First World Problems~ The film is fantastically well constructed and acted, to the point where even the predictable aspects felt genuine. Bier does a fantastic job with her cinematography and editing to help the audience connect to the characters, The framing device feels exploitative, though, and instead of saying something broader about social inequality it feels tacked on and distracting from the human drama. A great film with one significant flaw.

such a perfect marriage between plot and character here. it was just a little bit off for me, because i didn't personally resonate with the themes at a visceral level (but that's completely a personal matter and has nothing to do with the craftsmanship of the film). i also found bier's cinematic style a bit hectic, but i could appreciate the aesthetics. overall a rather great film, definitely worth a watch!

Interesting story and good performances, although it suffers from the dramatic situations being a little too obviously set-up, and it drags on a bit because it tries to make three or four characters into really deep, conflicted, multi-faceted gargantuors. It could have packed a better punch as a more stripped-to-basics story with less character detail. Susanne Bier directs emotional scenes very well and always captures true-to-life expressions, as well as surprises which add to the authenticity.

Bier (who cowrote this with Anders Thomas Jensen) explores her characters' moral dilemmas in ultra close-up. Stern, intense drama with superior performances.

A fascinating tale of a certain misguided tenderness, really quite sweet, and it's all rooted in characters that genuinely care about each other.

A powerful family drama that pricks liberal guilt and yet has a social conscience.

very typical drama in which a woman found another man before she knew she was pregnant with her first boyfriend. some explosive moments, but the dramatics are conventional, the music is cheesy, and the constant close-ups on everyone's eyes were annoying. what i really cannot believe, however, is that a white man's indian orphanage is used as a framing device for this story of rich white people. what on earth was susanne thinking? maybe it was an excuse to import some 'exotic' music.

Bier is great at capturing emotions with her swirling, intimate camerawork, although she crossed the line into overwrought slightly towards the end.

A soap opera with particularly contrived writing, the cheesiest and most predictable plot, an utterly wrong soundtrack and oodles of needless extreme close-ups. The capable cast is helpless to salvage anything of worth.

"The wunderkind Jensen's scripts are all schematic and prone to stock characters, but they are soap operas after all, and After the Wedding is beautifully performed by its eager cast." - Ed Gonzalez

Threatens to be a white guilt movie at the outset, where I'm expected to have contempt for successful white people in Denmark, but promptly veers off in a more nuanced and entertaining direction. Thankfully.

Powerful, managing 2plausibly present the various extremes of human experience and emotion in a little under 2 hours. Touching on the huge disparities between rich& poor, infidelity, the meaning of family, death, &what constitutes a "good" person to name just a few of the topics wending their way through the film. Alhtough it has flaws it's kind of a masterpiece 4 what it accomplishes. Not the stereotypical foreign life-is-miserable story either, as the film's message is uplifting in its own way

I like the representation of death in the film in addition to a very good cinematography with a lot of macro shots. We can still call this a melodrama i suppose :)
