Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005)

At an archaeological dig in Africa, Father Lankester Merrin has his first encounter with the devil incarnate. Merrin has focused on archeology, rather than spiritual matters and is intrigued when a church buried beneath the sand is excavated. Inside, he finds many signs of devil worship. To a great extent, he has lost his faith and is particularly haunted by events during the Nazi occupation and the impact of his decisions had on his parishioners. When the devil occupies the body of a young patient in the village hospital, Merrin risks his life to save him. (imdb)

Attempts to face up to the worst crimes of the modern world (Nazism, colonialism), and thereby to mount a defence of the metaphysics of guilt. Unsurprisingly, the means prove inadequate to the ends. Schrader says he removed some dialogue from son-of-a-murderer Carr’s script because it was “what you hear in a college dorm after about midnight and two beers and a joint”: a believable statement, but hard to say for sure if going all out in that direction would have hurt or helped the final result.

It's better than Harlin's film but that's not saying much. Both of them have the classic shitty prequel curse of making you think, this didn't need to be made.

After the last prequel to The Exorcist, I wasn't expecting much out of Dominion, given the fact that both prequels are the same exact story, just alternate versions of one another, but this one is MILES better than that first one. I don't even know how they managed to do this. This flowed together so naturally, the acting felt much more realistic and emotionally impactful, the story of the archeological dig seemed much more captivating. The church itself...looked better. idk...it just worked

Atrocious acting, particularly from the female lead, who is both wooden and awkward on camera. Skarsgard is good, however. a safe pair of hands, as always. Also, not scary or tense in the slightest.

Painful acting, absurdly unrealistic CG, and utterly unfrightening sequencing - how did such a mid-high-budget movie skimp on the major constituent parts of a horror film?

I kinda like this, but actually liked the theatrically released cut (Exorcist: The Beginning) better.

This is significantly more elegant, ambitious, and thoughtful than Harlin's prequel, and Skarsgard gives an effective performance. But in spite of all this, it's still pretty dull.

This film is watchable but only the once, Stellan Skarsgard was good as the young Father Merrin. This does feel like it hasn't been completed the special effects are laughable. Although the storyline very similiar and alot of the actors the same this does pull it of better, and gives a good insight to Father Merrin's past

Makes sense if you're not looking to be scared. Which is really bad news if it has the Exorcist name on it, because both studio execs and audiences are going to assume (and you know what they say about assuming...). Deserves a rewatch by all as a spiritual coming-of-age tale abandoned by its purse-holders.

A goofy finale, poor leading lady and special effects that wouldn't pass muster on a Sci-Fi channel production bring down what is an otherwise intelligent, well written good vs. evil tale.
