Luce

Intriguing drama feels like a bit of a set-up to nothing, establishing interesting ideas and notions about political correctness and #MeToo while failing to follow through on its own convictions - it may well be the point that it serves as a "conversation starter" however it makes it unsatisfying as drama. Superbly performed by all, with Spencer especially good, even if all the characters never really develop beyond their usefulness as symbols. Worthy of a rewatch.

It flirts with big and sometimes conflicting ideas, which I admire, but somehow I came out of it feeling that it was a little insubstantial. Which it shouldn't, considering the subject matter. But I guess I should give it more credit for even attempting to deal with certain things. Aside from that, I think Harrison Jr. was inconsistent, but everyone else was great-- very much a case of a few powerhouse actors outdoing a less accomplished actor. Still good if uneven with unfinished plot threads.

Seemingly jealous teacher has it out for her student from another country It's thoughtful and deals with relevant topics going on in the world today....But the problem for me is nothing is really settled or resolved and left me with more questions than answers I left this movie feeling disappointed and unsatisfied

Intense drama, almost a psychological thriller, addressing several issues in a provocative way. First impressions are challenged in an interesting way, and it becomes clear things aren't as they seem, but remains open-ended about where the truth lies.

What an insane, ambitious film. I'm honestly unsure if it's good or not. Just seeing topics like performative wokeness being explored to this extent is exciting, even if it rarely sticks the landing. Frantz Fanon was right about everything btw

A riveting and nuanced piece of post-Obama MeToo storytelling that regards prejudice and skepticism in an intelligent way that feels completely of its release year. For a film about accusations, it relishes in being an enigma, offering up the sort of questions and ambiguities that riddles our own lives. It approaches ideas about race that most contemporary films won't loiter nearby, giving us satisfaction and frustration over the messiness of truth-seeking.

(Just Watched) - Consensus: Great

An odd Drama-Thriller with less structure than other similar films. Good acting and fairly original. It requires quite a bit of your attention since there’s a lot to unpack. Probably not worth buying as I wouldn’t see it again, but it’s worth a watch if it’s of interest.

HYPERDRAMA! Every bit as confusing as it is intense.

A very carefully written, nuanced and complicated bit of drama. Very strong performances all around and it never stops being compelling or asking you to deal with difficult scenarios or questions. Just about as solid of a drama as you can ask for.

While I don't think this is a bad film, I think it's a fundamentally flawed one. It kicks up a cloud of issues, refusing to settle on what it's actually about. While it can obviously be fine to deal with a lot of questions, two of it's most central issues are in deep conflict with each other, and the film's refusal to settle on either of them renders the entire film ineffective.

Interesting thought experiment, but what it lacked for me is believability. I engaged with Luce as a statement but not a real multidimensional person.

Looking in from the outside, the inherent craziness of the US seems to have gotten a lot crazier over recent years, and in some new though related directions. This film seems intended to open reflections on that recent craziness, and in some ways succeeds, while at the same time giving off the impression that it may not be totally immune from the same phenomena. While fairly well done, some of the narrative mechanisms are clunky and contrived, and the speechifying doesn't always ring true.

This is a fantastic psychological mystery. And as you make your deductions the film instills doubt by evoking the shame and guilt frequently associated with discussions around race, gender, and class. The biggest question: is this kid a supervillain in training or a promising young man facing accusations from an overzealous adult? The whole movie has an intense, methodical mood via some great music and the best work I've seen from Spencer & Watts. Highly recommended and worth talking about.

Despite having 3 of my favourite actors in it, this is a well acted mess. Imagine "We need to talk about Kevin" without the last 15 minutes. Questions; possibilities; lies; assumptions; deceit: Luce throws everything into the debate and leaves you to use your own prejudices to come to a decision. As for the ridiculous plot, if Watts/Roth had ask Luce directly about the accusations, it may have helped! .. Asking "have YOU got anything to tell us?" will NEVER, in my experience, elicit an answer.

What a crap! Boring for the damn! I just endured the first eight minutes. It is not a movie, but a piece of politically correct indoctrination.

Develops an interesting dynamic that promises a more complex drama, but doesn't really make good on that promise - opting for a rather tacky resolution which retrospectively kind of re-confirms the exposition, lightening the gravity of every character. I'm not sure if it's the character or Kelvin Harrison, but he is grating to an extent that seems like a cheap ruse to prevent or postpone the audience's sympathy.

Not obviously amazing, nor obviously horrible. It feels staged and heavy-handed, but that makes sense considering this was adapted from the theatre. The central character and the movie itself feel duplicitous or collusive to the extent that it's difficult to know what is inspired and what is simply dramatic muddle.

I am not really sure what this movie's message was- it seemed to want to share 2 messages but just came away with 1) kids have secret lives 2) parents unfairly and dangerously try to force kids to be some way as a coping mechanism for their own traumas
