watching a gregg araki movie as someone who grew up in the '90s is like being assaulted by your own sub-conscious.

Had I looked at the cast list before watching this film -- it even has a kid from Camp Nowhere, funny that -- I would have thought it might have a lot of potential. But other than some intriguing sets and peculiar clothing (when worn, which wasn't that often), it just wasn't my thing.

Good lord, this is a new level of bad, obnoxious filmmaking. The writing and acting is terribly contrived beyond what I ever thought possible, much less for a film with big names and a presumably large budget. Extremely cringeworthy in every imaginable way. Even if all of this is intentional, it doesn't make for an entertaining or profound film whatsoever. Araki was clearly going for a surrealist Van Sant thing here, but he failed miserably.

Top badass moment? Our hero spends $387 on CDs. Good to see him getting his priorities right. Nothing like any of what happens in this movie ever happened to me when I was at university. Then again, Coleraine is about as far from LA as it’s possible to get, although the golf links in Portstewart were responsible for developing many amateur mycologists’ skills. However, I once burnt an entire Hillman Imp in my bedroom fireplace in an effort to stay warm. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

I almost sat and wondered if the bad dialogue was just supposed to be parody but then I decided I don't care whatsoever. What is the point of this film?

One of the most late '90s films I've seen. This is a highly compact, compressed, and very enjoyable film (if you're down with the rather exaggerated portrayal of an exaggerated generation). Definitely a case of style over substance, with some of the characters not quite as drawn-out as they deserve to be, but the style is great and identifiably Araki's. Very cool ending, not that everyone will like it.

I didn't like this as much as Araki's other movies, though it has its fair share of moments.

Although I like this less and less as I get older, I still think it is a hilarious pastiche on early 90s TV shows such as 90210.

what? Seriously, the movie just keeps getting stranger, and the stunt casting of a series of moderate stars keeps you thinking "Hey, wasn't that...?"
