I put on Rings, my phone also rings, and a voice whispers "Seven scenes". Several minutes later, the movie is still playing but I am dead inside.

You know who the Ring victims are now? Hipster douche bags who want a "vintage" vcr and of course your grandparents at their cottage. The moment the movie ended my phone rang and a voice on the other end laughed at me for wasting two hours of my life.

Ranking among some of the most hideously inept films I've ever had the misfortune of witnessing, "Rings" is incoherent to the nth degree, and so laughably, unbelievably awful that I scarcely know how to feel, with plot elements, pacing, and acting that feels like everyone involved had a shared, crippling stroke.

Rings is a sequel that's coming out a decade too late, and that's usually a bad sign. This one has two potentially interesting premises, but saves one for the finale and skirts over the other one as quickly as possible. It doesn't do anything remotely scary or creepy, it tries to make its villain sympathetic - but also not - and doesn't have any other characters worth anything. It's pointless, banal, and more likely to put you to sleep than elevate your heart rate.

The protagonist solves a boring mystery by recognizing scenes from a college art student's surrealism-101 video in a small town. Most characters lack any meaningful personality and only serve to advance the poorly paced and wandering plot. The true horror is not so much Samara, but this movie itself, which is a monstrosity of inanity and will make you marvel at how vapid cinematic experience can be.

Rings suffers from a poor script many years too late, with very little effort to update it into a plausibly good sequel. How movies like Rings get made anymore is baffling to me, but honestly it has one upside, which is some pretty inventive camerawork involving Samara. It's really bad though, just comically dumb.

Really makes me appreciate the baseline competence of the original.

Rings is an exposition laden improvement on the last film. The thrill of the original is gone, but for the fans, there are answers to be found this time. If nothing else, Rings is a suitably atmospheric entry in the dormant franchise. It's just not all that memorable or suspenseful.

I'd say this is about on par with the second one, as far as I can remember. It reminds me very much of last year's Blair Witch (2016) - a totally unnecessary sequel that is more like a remake. They both attempted to build on the mythology of the first movies, but ended up just covering the same old ground. The dialogue is bad, most of the acting is bad, and it's not scary. I'm not surprised it failed. Thankfully, horror has gotten a lot better in 2017 since this movie.

They added iPhones to the mix. Yawn. A moment here or there, and it looks okay...but it's as bad as you think it might be.

Samara used to be an interesting entity, with a clear modus operandi, limitations and a backstory. Now she's just a "generic horror movie ghost", dishing out murderous telekinesis anywhere on the globe whenever and for whatever reason. What used to be an elegant, believable backstory is now a convoluted mishmash that strains belief. The conclusion makes you wonder exactly why Samara waited until now to do all she does, when she appears to be basically omnipotent. There's no horror to be had.

Pek yeni bir şey yok. Daha önce olanları türleme var. Halka 7'ye kadar götürürüz biz bu seriyi karanlığı da kapıda galiba.
