The Broken Hearts Gallery

Had no expectations but ended up really enjoying this! Geraldine Viswanathan is a TREASURE and instantly catapults Lucy to an all-time romcom lead, while the cast around her are just as loveable. Script is super funny with great characters, and while it’s formulaic it delays certain reveals so when they come up they hit harder than expected. The concept is a bit of a stretch, and the final drama keeping the couple apart feels forced, but this is one of the best romcoms I’ve seen in ages.

The Broken Hearts Gallery is an enjoyable RomCom thanks to Viswanathan & Montgomery's performances. There are plenty of cheesy & clichéd moments, but that’s part of the fun with a film like this. The pop-stuffed soundtrack is decent, albeit a tad conventional. I found the friends & the art-scene setting a little eye-roll inducing, but that's just personal taste. There are a few issues with pacing & editing, particularly the banal text/ social media inclusions, but it's a solid film overall.

I liked the quirky main character played by Geraldine Viswanathan and she had a few adorable moments. Much of the dialog was smart and funny. A quality production with good music. They successfully glossed over the pathetic bits and kept the story moving. However, I'm not a fan of how they handled the rather predictable ending, Overall, it was entertaining and interesting, and even a little cathartic, so it was worthwhile.

Is Broken Heart Gallery a new kind of romcom? Sure. Is it groundbreaking in its new-ness? Nope. Is it a promising debut from Natalie Krinsky? Absolutely. Will I watch it again? Well, my wife loved it, so yeah, probably.

This movie became more enjoyable once I shifted my headspace to match the movie's, which is that of a twenty-something who in a lot of ways hasn't matured past a teenager. That's less a criticism of the movie than a feature. It's easy to tell that this is Krinsky's directorial debut but the story is mostly charming, the characters are mostly relatable, and despite the narrative leaving more than a little to be desired, I was mostly entertained. Shout-out Nathan Dales who steals the show.

Surprisingly works very well. breezy and cute and everyone is the perfect mix of hateably annoying and charming. New York was its own character in a way.

The leads have a way better friendship chemistry than a romantic one. There was little to no sexual tension and I’m sorry for those who think skinship is tacky - it’s necessary. If you don’t burn with an urge to fuck someone you like, they are condemned to be your friend only (speaking of hetnom relationship as depicted in this film). Great banter between two very different energy characters but absolutely no sparks. The movie leaves you wanting more.
