The Jesus Rolls

worth a watch

Even with the bad reviews firmly lowering my expectations The Jesus Rolls is a weak viewing experience. There's barely any reason for the connection to the Big Lebowski character, and even Turturro's portrayal of Jesus Quintana is nothing but a shadow of what came before. Tonally there's more similarity to something like Napoleon Dynamite than TBL but ultimately it's the lack of any narrative cohesion or direction which sees The Jesus Roll(s) into the gutter cinematically speaking.

I maintain that deploying this character in a remake of LES VALSEUSES is one of the most inspired acts of derivation in l'histoire du cinéma, desperdiciado in scrubbing away all sense of transgression. A few laughs. I can't remember them, but I'm pretty sure they were there.

Comparisons to The Big Lebowski are ultimately pointless because it's a remake of a French film from the mid 70's with Jesus inserted and bares little resemblance to the Coens' style. The real problem is that it is rather aimless and unfunny, and Turturro's direction is barely adequate, so whatever chemistry he has with Cannavale and Tautou is generally wasted.

This is a weird and strange film. It is not plot heavy but it has a lot of weird and interesting characters. This film is radically different than the Big Lebowski. Overall I would recommend this film.

This could have been good and quirky given the source material. Instead, it's very tedious throughout.
