Waiting for the Barbarians

A horrifically sad story of the arrogance and ignorance of colonial imperialism. A local magistrate is the only person with any compassion or intelligence in a command role. But, he is stripped of his command and jailed unjustly. It is an infuriating display of institutional injustice and inhumanity. Though it is a beautiful production, it was hard to enjoy. Thankfully the torture was off screen. Worthwhile, but heart-wrenching. Mark Rylance was magnificent. Johnny Depp was entirely unnecessary.

It was interesting. Reminds me a tiny bit of In the Penal Colony, with the brutal running of a colony and the blind obedience that ultimately reveals the flaws in the so cherished "system" they set up. Some bits were long or seemed less useful, but it's okay I guess.

Morally indefensible actions carried out under the guise of "I was only carrying out orders" pretty much sums up "History", whether it be Colonialism (as in this case), Slavery, inter-tribe or inter-religeous violence and rarely is is portrayed so stunningly as in this film, But that is not the beating heart of this story. That comes from a simply mesmerizing performance by Rylance as a kind, gentle man, who takes on the guilt of inhuman actions, or indeed inactions, at huge personal expense

This film puts Tarkovsky's Stalker into a more global perspective, like the West's focus on self-sacrifice as the only means to wash one's hands of one's own complicity in the atrocities of Empire. This movie culminates in an intriguing illustration of white guilt that transubstantiates an act of humility like the washing of feet to fetishism. All in all, Guerra crafts a slow, strangely endearing religious film, unique for its absolute absence of religion.

Ciro Guerra's first English language film and my first disappointment with him. It's well directed and shot, and Rylance works very hard in the lead, but the story, with its villains and saints and nothing in between, is weightless. The lovable Depp seems slightly outside of his element but it may be unfair to judge because he is given so very little to work with. I haven't read the book, but I certainly hope it has more to offer than the moralizing plight-porn of this adaptation.

Torture porn, filmed only during the golden hours. If you like shadows, this film is for you.
