Although he has appeared in numerous films, it is by his television roles that he is generally known, starting with the BBC's Lovejoy (1986-94) and particularly in the HBO Western drama Deadwood (2004-06). Score is inflated because of McShane's presence, still a solid enough adaptation. Praise for the visuals are probably coming from people who never watched Bryan Fuller's prior project Hannibal, although here he unpacked all of that homoerotic tension into a sex scene with a genie, so swings and roundabouts. S1 is 85ish, then the show spun its wheels after Fuller left for two seasons (both still around 55/60ish on the strength of the cast and somewhat forced aesthetics) and then it got cancelled.

Seasons 1-2: Obviously the second season drags a little, but with the first being as impressive as it was, it's hard to blame it. And really, Season 2 would still be a WELL above average season of any show. It's dense, mythological, and moody. It's sexy, fascinating, and complex. This show is what TV needs. This here is a series that will pull you in deeper the more you try to dig your way out and i would easily recommend this to anyone binging in solitude.

aside perhaps from MVPs browning and schreiber, s1 is just so much setup and showmanship (mcshane at the start of the finale: "we haven't got time for a story, just do the fucking work", no shit), but that's appropriate to a show about the gradual rekindling of faith. it's too narratively/tonally unconventional and visually batshit not to like, in any case; fuller's hyper-artificial, lucid, arachnid flourishes are abundant, and if you trade gods for carriages it kinda brings SNOWPIERCER to mind.

Knew from the opening titles the makers 'got it'. Changes to the book work really well and -while I wasn't sure at first- McShane has really grown on me. Looking forward to the rest.

I am very happy after seeing the pilot. It's a tough translation coming from the novel, but the pilot is extremely faithful for the most part. Decent imagery and effects for a TV show mean this should be one hell of a ride.

For some reason, this show just doesn't interest me at all. I feel like I'm missing something.

Wonderful to see what Lovejoy did after selling antiques: starts off brilliantly, then with each season there are diminishing returns and rightly got cancelled after Season 3.

Probably the best thing Gaiman has made since Sandman.

Not the best book adaptation around, but I loved the vibe. It feels unique, like a weird neverending road movie. Can't rate it more than 5/10 though because of the extremely abrupt ending, the cancellation was predictable but the way it ended is brutal, they couldn't make it any more unsatisfying if they tried on purpose. Would have been a 6 or maybe even a 7 otherwise.

Started fairly promising but clearly became clear this lacked any depth or anything. So much worse than the book.

This could have been even more brilliant that it is (with the same show runner, producer, cast etc) but it manages to be damn fine TV. Beautiful, dark and sexy.

Season 1 starts really good (visual ecstasy!), but goes downhill from episode 4: the series entirely discards the more interesting story line for a few hours, only to end on an annoying teaser.

S1:(99) This is the most visually stunning series I have ever seen. A tale of God's and men's Bryan Fuller continues to make excellent work. This is One of his greatest.

Still quite tacky in the style department but at least the writing in season two gets better.

Como uma fonte tão interessante foi transformada em uma balbúrdia cafona de clichês visuais.
