I appreciate Rock parlaying the slap into a comedy special. There are a few big laughs here, but nothing pushing the envelope.

At times brilliant but too often a little been there, done that, no?

His preachiest special, but there are laughs to be had.

Yeah we get it Chris. You're old and edgy. You don't care about what modern people think. Yeah. Badass.

"Selective Outrage" isn't without some strong comedic moments - you know, the ones where the artist makes an unexpected and on-point connection that tickles your brain. Unfortunately though, those moments aren't the ones prevailing here, for this is an arguably overlong special comprised mostly of far from challenging material, long gaps between punchlines, an insistence on verbatim repetition of phrases and a frantic energy that's limited to the delivery but is absent from the jokes themselves.

Dude really named his special after its least funny part.

An agreeable, surprisingly benign set that lands a few middling right hooks, but is fairly placid and conservative, especially compared to Rock’s more incendiary early shows. Does a reasonable job of building up to the “Slapgate” elephant in the room, but regardless of personal opinion, it does seem his final conclusion is a little bit obvious and simplistic, given the almost year of no comment. Still good fun, but ultimately forgettable.

Rock - arms pinned out stiffly like he’s forgotten to take the hanger out of his jacket - provides some laughs and makes good points in this, although conspicuously these all appear in isolation, with no memorable extended ‘bits’. He addresses the Oscars slap and while amusing you expect a little more after a whole year to prepare the material. Perhaps a bit overlong for what’s there, you’ll laugh but forget this one pretty quickly. A generous 6/10.

Rock is a comedy legend, but with that comes certain expectations. Selective Outrage provided nothing truly groundbreaking; most of the topics covered felt a bit played out by now. There were few moments of genuine insightfulness, and many decent punchlines throughout the set. Overall it was enjoyable, though I don't think it will be remembered.

More old-man ranting.

I typically find Chris Rock to be tasteless and here he fails at genuinely uniting groups of people, instead primarily making mockeries of the things that make people different and unique. Generally promotes superiority aligned thinking. Met my expectations.
