Imagine we discovered a portal to a parallel universe. Cool right? And you could drive your car through the portal and explore the other universe. Neato right? But first you have to negotiate the DMV and with the parallel universe DMV to make sure your driver's license and car specifications were up to spec for both universe. That would be pretty boring and monotonous right? Well that's what "Counterpart" celebrates: parallel universe bureaucracy. Yay!

JK Simmons shines in the double agent double role but the narrative built around him is a bit too slow for me. It takes a while to get going and no twist feels twisty. Solid enough action set pieces sprinkled into a sprawling spy narrative it crawls a long at times trying to captivate audiences with long winded speeches about how the others are not the same people instead of showing us both worlds and how they differed. Dramatic dialogue means nothing among missed opportunity and obvious clues.

idea is brilliant but the rhythm is slow. it could be finished in 1 season if it was a better writer.

It's frustrating how the guys managed to take an incredible premise and turn it into a huge disappointment. I couldn't go ahead and watch the second season.

So far, an excellent sci-fi trenchcoat show that deals with two parallel earths engaged in a cold war between each other.

The premise is intriguing both on the character level and world-wide, a nice drip feed of what went different. But it gets increasingly ridiculous towards the end of season 1 (makes a big deal about security but none of it works, also characters get stupid), not sure if I'll continue knowing there's nothing after season 2. Viruses ought to go in both directions (but 'our' side has better quarantine?), random mutations would happen differently in each world.

DNF in the first episode. smart person Tyler Cowen recommended this. disregard, it's the usual TV with iffy dialogue and thoughtless violence

Jesus, what a boring piece of crap. Any resemblance of tension is gone with the second season. Uninspired on every level except the story idea, and it gets old quickly during the hours of mumbled dialogue over a mind-numbing piano score.

Really interesting idea but really bad pacing issues in the storytelling.

Very interesting premise, but it's poorly executed and falls flat. This shouldn't be a boring show, but the writing is painfully lacking in substance and ingenuity.

Painfully boring; and I am saying it having watched until the half of 2×05, where I could not endure more of the talkie-talkie. The sci-fi is a context here, sure we see both worlds, but it is not that important as the politics relationships between them.

Double Simmons and lots of moving parts almost make it feel like things are happening but they are not. I doubt it gets better in season two.

This is great. A spy drama; spiritual successor to Alias and Fringe, with a fantastic set of actors

One of those shows I really want to like more than I have thus far. I'm definitely a fan of Simmons and the premise is loaded with potential, but there just hasn't been a wealth of thrill in this thriller. The first season was just interesting enough for me to watch entirely and hope for an improved second season.

Does a good job of exploring the human dimension of the multiple worlds idea--something which crappy shows like Black Mirror would never even conceive of.

S1: 75 - S2: 69. After an interesting 1st season based on an intriguing concept featuring J.K. Simmons playing two opposite roles, the 2nd season piles up dumb story decisions/plot points, reduces J.K. Simmons's part(s) and makes everything important in these fictional worlds related to the family matters and broken friendships of a few characters (relationship tree syndrome),

It's a parallel universe espionage thriller with J.K. Simmons in a double role. If you're not aroused yet, I don't know what to tell you.
