Given the unpredictable nature of autism, I was glad to see little planning being poured into this, even if some parts had me bursting out laughing. I mean, really, while I respect the parents for their devotion and daily display of affection, I couldn't help but crack up every time one those kids would sidetrack the central discussion and leave Louis disoriented or embarrased by the revelation of some personal details borrowed off of his Wikipedia page. Nicky was awesome, as are all these kids.

One of the better Louis Theroux documentaries, as it clearly illustrates the varying degrees of autism and the monumental difficulties that comes with raising an autistic child. As usual Louis is empathetic with everyone involved allowing for moments of genuine tenderness and showing that sometimes perceived rudeness is innocent social ineptness.

Shows the negative and positive sides of having a child with autism. Nicky was awesome, funny and very smart, and the other kids had something special too. I like how Louis interacted with the kids

I cannot say what I think about autism and so-called spectrum disorders in the space of 500 characters; nor can Theroux, in a 52 minute television program, do much more than apply his sensitive but direct approach to showing a glimpse of life at home and school. It does seem significant that whereas it is not uncommon to find documentaries about children such as these, with severe cases, there seems much less interest in making documentaries about the realities of life once they reach adulthood.

Much lighter in tone than the Dementia one, but this has its moment where you just go :( , hi-fives for everyone. The Nicky segments could've carried this alone; his reaction to when Louis asks if he'd like a hug is PRICELESS.

Some of Louis' best work to date. Insightful, funny, sad, all the makings of a great documentary. Nicky was incredibly cool and entertaining, could've spent the duration of the movie with him and it would've been just as satisfying. Louis childlike demeanor works perfectly in this situation too, really good movie.

Rather depressing for me. Theroux puts just as much focus on the parents as the kids, showing how (both) put an enormous amount of effort into living with autism. Through the three different kids (who differ in age), he shows a range in this spectrum, with two of which looking particularly extreme. Highlight was Nicky looking up Theroux on Wikipedia, which is what all of his subjects should be doing when he's filming them.

Like many have said it's definitely the least pressing Theroux doc but you can't help but love everyone in this. Cried throughout.

His lightest documentary, but his best from what I've seen. There isn't any questions asked really, just families living their lives. Very touching.

Theroux's schtick is to ask a few open questions and then let his subjects do all the talking. With (most of) these autistic interviewees, this just isn't possible. Cue Theroux squirming to communicate with and gain information from those suffering across the spectrum of the disorder, including particularly amusing moments with the presenter looking genuinely worried about the sudden "behaviours" exhibited. Covers many issues over the hour, speaking to some likeable and sympathetic people.

Insightful documentary on autism. Much respect for the parents.

One of Louis' least aggressive and confrontational documentaries but the inoffensiveness of it sometimes borders on dull. Between this and the one where he hangs out with that creepy kid called Hugh, Louis is really good with autistic kids.
