Who'd have thought that what started out as a simple transgressive cartoon about foul-mouthed kids would become the cleverest, most incisive source of social commentary around?

South Park lives and dies by ability to skew topical issues within engaging character driven stories. And for the most part Parker & Stone posses both the satirical wit and sensibilities to pull this off, which, considering the insanely short production time, is nothing short of astonishing.

Throughout its 18+ year run, Parker and Stone have had their hands firmly on the cultural zeitgiest, which helps while they rape it. SP is a compendium of what has made us tick for two decades, teaching us about us while it insults us - which is really proof of a good friend who calls you out on your shit when you're a douche. It's this quality that has made it a part of the culture it addresses, instead of merely a spitballer in the back of the class- and therefore one of the best TV shows ever

At least for me, one of the few shows that didn't peak in the first 4 or 5 seasons. I would even go as far to say that Parker and Stone have gotten better at writing comedy since they started the show.

At times, Simpsons like levels of brilliant societal observation, at others, petty petulant childlike ignorance. Catch it on a good episode and you will love it, on a bad one you may never watch it again.

The often low-brow humor hides just how smart this show is. Equal parts commentary, satire, and sometimes just unbridled rage at certain aspects of society highlight South Park's unique place in television history.

By far the funniest and most relevant social commentary on television. Thanks to that crazy 6 day production schedule, they are always on top of what's going on in the world as it's happening, and they always have a way to spin it in a hilarious fashion.

I have a lot of respect for Matt and Trey. They're clever, funny guys. That's why it's a little sad to see that as I've grown (a bit) in the almost 20 years this show has run, the dick and ass jokes in each episode have remained the same. Consider this: One day (if not already) you'll have a kid. And that kid will ask you: "Dada/Mama - is this 'The Wire'"? And you're going to have to look into those baby blues and answer: "No child. That's the whole fucking problem. Now get back to work."

A series that has a lot of amazing episodes where I was laughing my eyeballs out like "Vote or Die," but a lot of other episodes feel like they have less of a punch. Still though, I can appreciate a lot of the social commentary they offer in this show and how well they parody so many things in our culture in the most crudest way imaginable. Sometimes I feel like it's worth watching an episode just for the punchline at the end, such as the episode with the Japanese dolphin hunters.

In, maybe, 20 years we will look back and find ourselfs trying to find out stuff, like: How did we thought at that time? What was the discussion like, about? And then, we will turn to, turn on the fitting South Park episode and will find a few answers. Its a really important show. A terrible, toxic and bad one. How fitting!

Much prefer the newer -more topical/satirical- stuff to the old 'kids swearing hur hur' early episodes.

Brilliant. Moronic. Inspired! Cliched. Peaks and valleys unlike any other show, but mostly due to how well Parker & Stone respond to current topics in the media. Not every episode is funny, but every season has great episodes.

love the endless skewering of every opinion anyone has ever held about anything, imploring the audience to doubt itself via the most juvenile, offensive and annoying means imaginible. love the way some episodes ride on the back of an awful running gag and they just don't give a shit. love how they capture and torture every cliché in the book. i think butters is a splendid creation. i still laugh about chef's demise. but it's randy motherfucking marsh who seals the deal. he's my hero.

Sometimes witty, sometimes annoying. Episodes range from incredibly funny, insightful, and dark to, well, that one Towelie/Oprah episode. I long since stopped watching every episode. But that said, credit where it's due; this show is easily better in season 19 than The Simpsons was at that point in its run.

I just noticed the word similarity between South Park and Stone Parker. I know is stupid, but haven't seen anyone comment on that. As for the series: seasons 5 to 8 are amazing. The rest ranges between good and decent (which in over 20 seasons is quite an accomplishment)

The seasons, and episodes, are hit-and-miss, but this was an instant classic back in 1997. I remember standing in Jr. High with the kids in front of the building and talking about last night's new South Park. Parker and Stone are also not afraid to tackle any issue, and they do so with a total disregard for our current partisan climate. Nothing is sacred, and nothing should be. That's part of the charm of the series. It's not perfect, far from it, but it is funny and has left it's mark.

I love this show. It's a whilrwind experience due to it's unique low-fi, quick production format, giving it the opportunity to be a razor sharp social satire, or just plain buffoonery. When it's working though, it cuts deep. And even when it's not it is full of a cast of solid and versatile characters.

South Park has been the most consistent adult animated comedy show. It doesn't always hit a home run, not at all, but at least it's still producing truly fantastic episodes where other shows dropped so low they could never recover. I don't always agree with Parker and Stone's politics, but they've made me laugh until I was crying more times than I could count.

Based off a couple dozen random episodes over the years, I was never a committed viewer. It was at its best focusing on crude humor, because all that sociopolitical commentary has aged liked cheap sushi. Best episode that I saw was the Heavy Metal parody "Major Boobage".

It's my favorite animate tv series, so i'm biased. But who think SP it's just (hilarious) shit jokes doesn't understand it. First: they always build their episodes on a strong storytelling structure, contrary to "Family Guy" or bad Simpsons episodes, so it will never be a complete junk. Second: It evolved during the years and in the last 2-3 seasons basically it's only social, politic & pop satire: the 20° season feels like Black Mirror; now it's less laughs, more thinking.

Its social commentary and satire have been remarkably sharp. It's hard to imagine that such a show that started with construction paper cutouts and was mockingly bummed about only getting airtime on Comedy Central has become such a cultural icon. It's lost a step as it's dragged on, but it still has gems.

Peaked around the Scott Tenorman episode, which apparently was well over a decade ago now. Most of aforementioned decade was spent jumping between being tedious and being annoying, with only a few funny jokes to go around. No idea why it's still going.

Haven't seen it in a few seasons, though I believe the newer episodes have insufferably forced topical "humour". But the first eight or nine seasons (and especially the first five), still feel like a fresh and totally confident cartoon with seemingly low-key home-made DIY qualities. It was in these earlier seasons when the four characters shined the best and funniest, although admittedly some of the secondary characters (like Randy) got funnier in later seasons.

South Park has earned its perfect score the hard way - by cultivating so much brilliance throughout the series, combined with the nostalgia of going into 6th grade home room and reciting the swear words we learned the night before. Long live the immature era of South Park which went on to evolve into one of the smartest parody/political satire comedies of all time. The always punctual Stan, Kyle, Kenny, Butters and even Cartman have been great friends to have over the years. Thanks Matt & Trey

How do you even rate a show that's as sprawling and long-running as South Park? Been probably a decade since I watched more than a stray episode here and there, but the fact that quotes and references from 15-20 years ago are still fresh in my mind has to count for something.

I liked it better during season one, when it was just chaotic, vulgar fun. Politics are boring, and the silly sense of humour is undercut by decades of the creators' self-important political ramblings.

Of the formulaic animated shows I've seen, this rises to the top. It is incredibly stupid but highly witty and intelligent at the same time. I haven't found a bad episode yet, but some of the material referenced is based on current events, so a knowledge of 90s pop culture is necessary for the earlier seasons.
