This film moved me in a way that very few ever have. I can understand some of the criticism, but for me everything clicked. Its visual beauty is staggering. Hugh Jackman has never delivered a more powerful performance and the script is as heartbreaking as it is uplifting. Not to mention the soundtrack! Take a step back and see it for the fantasy it is: a love story told in separate multiverses from the reality the characters live in. A simple tale of devotion and loss told in marvelous fashion.

The true genius of the film is the simplistic theme of love and death. It allows for a creative narrative structure and beautiful visual moments while still being relatable. The only flaw is that the huge budget cuts make the Mayan fight scene seem very small and low budget. It does however not change the fact that this is my favorite movie, my favorite acting performance and by far my favorite score. The final scene that resolves the three storylines is the most magical moment in cinema history

Before Mickey Rourke (rewarded with Best Actor) and before Natalie Portman (rewarded with Best Actress) there was Hugh Jackman carrying an Aronofsky movie the exact same way. His reward: another role as Wolverine. When you can list The Fountain and The Prestige in a single year, you can take a few of the next ones off.

A beautiful and melancholic look at life and death. It is an amazing and heartwrenching tale and perhaps the best new film I've seen this year. Hugh Jackman runs through the emotional wringer, doing a great job in his three roles. Also, Clint Mansell's score is incredible. I'll stop with the superlatives and just say see it.

Emotional and beautifully told, dealing with loss and the coming to terms with one's mortality. Allowing for repeated motifs, 'The Fountain' elegantly interweaves two (arguably) fictional stories into the main one of the movie's reality. Smartly, this enables complex interpretations through the knowledge of their authors' respective perspective and intent. Jackman's flawless performance is one for the ages. I also agree with Ross and several other reviewers that Clint Mansell's score is sublime.

You are either on one side of the fence or the other with this movie. Judging by my score you would already figure I am on the positive side. Visuals are next to perfect here and Jackman provides a great lead performance. This movie for whatever reason just got to me, I can't even explain the feeling despite that it was unique.

I am admittedly somewhat unsure of whether I completely understand this movie. I am however, quite sure that it is both beautiful and epic.It's not a movie to nitpick over, it's a movie to absorb and enjoy, and if you can do this, it can be deep and emotionally resonant.Even if it doesn't work literally, it works thematically. It's also shot beautifully, with gorgeous scenes cast in an almost everpresent glow of gold.It's wonderful how the stories echo each other in theme and in parallel shots.

An incredibly ambitious movie that, aside from a few missteps, works quite well. The chemical effects are mesmerizing, the story is ambiguous and intriguing, yet the whole thing is grounded by essentially personal elements - the loves, fears, and hopes of main characters Jackman and Weisz, who are fantastic.

somehow this managed to be enormously emotional despite (or because of?) smashing some sort of record for colour intensity per square inch. not that i particularly agree with the director's apparent intentions here: apparently, death is 'what makes us special'. well, that's a pretty fucking shit way to be special. anyway, the visuals are obviously astounding, with one of the most ridiculous crescendos i've ever seen. i like crescendos.

Grabbed me for most of the first two acts; unfortunately the third act gets too melodramatic, but the ending is wonderful again. One of the most ambitious films I've seen recently, and should be commended on that aspect: more films should have even half the ambition this one has. Stylistically, it's interesting to see Aronofsky lifting himself from the confining MTV-style editing of his previous films, and moving towards a more pleasant style that would be perfected in The Wrestler.

Though even this level of cinema making is not enough to trick me into buying the pumped up story. If you couldn't see through the blur how basic the story is just read the comic.

The Fountain is a gorgeous movie. Nearly every shot could be screen grabbed, framed and hung on a wall with pride. I appreciate the amount of meticulous consideration that went into the script and the structure - there are many instances of parallelism that give the movie a tightly knit feel. Jackman and Weisz give touching performances, and the music adds another layer of emotional depth to an already emotional experience. I could stare at this movie for hours and hours.

Interesting film, yet slow and needlessly oblique. For a long period I thought it played like a cruel satire on the obsession with eternal life (and vellus hair), but then it takes a different, and definitely sincere turn, and does so quite effectively. Before that, though, long stretches are a study of myopic juvenilia in, haphazardly, historical fantasy, present time, and otherworldly settings. Many of these scenes, while beautiful, are very dark, and the combined effect is numbing.

I rate this so low because i felt it attempted to be overly artistic to the point where only a smarter than average person could even figure out what the hell is going on. I hate when films try to do this. It was a very very slow film as well. Alot of people rate this movie very high and yes the acting was ok (over dramatic imo) and some of the special effects were nice, the plot was all over the place and i hated the ending.

I understand some of the criticism, but sometimes you just need to get your head out of a film and put your heart in to it. When you do that, this film is wonderful. It is touching and emotional. I'm not a huge fan of Hugh Jackman, but he put himself out there in this film and I can see that. Rachel Weisz however seems to be perfect for this role. It has been on my list of films that I still needed to watch for a long time, but now I don't understand why I waited this long!

I can't even begin to go somewhere with this movie. Darren Aronofsky is the visionary genius of the time, and when this ended, my mouth was open in straight astonishment. I'd been hyping this up in my mind (I love Aronofsky) for months, and this still exceeded expectations. To the critics giving it bad reviews because of the "messy plot" and "failed artsiness," you guys clearly have no idea what the point of an Aronofsky film is.

The movie is visually fantastic. It reaches for the stars, literally, but comes up short. While I can appreciate the effort and the intention, it simply didn't hold my attention. When I left the movie, I thought about it, came up with an explanation that seemed to fit well enough, at which point I forgot about the movie. No dobut this movie will reach cult status with many people, most of whom will claim, "if you didn't like it, you didn't get it." OK, I'm fine with that.

I find that I may be in the minority who were emotionally affected by it. Then again that could just be me being a sap. The Fountain is a tough film to rate. The plot is difficult and complex, but it's gorgeous to look at and consistently entertaining. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't need to run to a message board to figure out that ending, and in the end I prefer plots that make me think, not make me sort out every single puzzle piece. Jackman's wonderful, though. Just wonderful.

A beautiful film, both visually and emotionally. Jackman gives a terrific performance, and Clint Mansell's score is perfect. Amazingly, there's not a single computer effect in the entire film -- the effects were created with micro-photography on chemical reactions. As good as the film is, the graphic novel is better: with a bigger budget, this would be a masterpiece. It really stands up to repeat viewings, and the plot becomes crystal clear. If someone you love has recently died, this is a 100.

The focus of this film is about time and eternal love. The flaw is that Aronofsky was probably a bit too ambitious in his storytelling and at times the situations seem rather convoluted. The sci-fi elements and quasi-religious imagery also teeter dangerously on the brink of total absurdity. Hugh Jackman is strong in this role. Overall the film might have needed a bit more thought in the writing. Despite the flaws the imagery is simply beautiful though.

However this film never quite shakes off its air of pretentiousness. It certainly does not spoil the film, bit it is there. That said the more I watch this movie the more I love it. A major improvement after the godawful RFAD. Some have compared this to 2001, but The Fountain is much more open and ambiguous. I can think of several ways to read it, and none of them feel wrong to me. I like this open-endedness, and I liked the thoughtful themes about death and acceptance. The visual style was nice too, although a bit overbearing at times with all the haze and glow. The acting was kind of a mixed bag, I thought some of it was a little overdone.

Imagine a Nicholas Sparks type of story, but without the hackiness. Throw in direction from Darren Aronofsky, and you've got The Fountain. The visuals are (for lack of a better term) breathtaking, and Hugh Jackman is just excellent. The film was a tad slow in the beginning, and I can definitely see where people could paint this with the pretensiouness brush, but I really enjoyed the simple story and didn't try to over analyze it. Gorgeous movie, inside and out.

A good majority of the movie is left for the viewer to either figure out or interpret to their own fancy, while some may like that, I hated it. Yes, the movie is visually stunning and will definitely stand the test of time, but if I had turned off the movie at the 1 hour mark (2/3 through) I would have known just as much about the story and the characters as if I had watched the entire movie.

Great visuals, but light on the action - The Fountain was produced for what would be the budget for the "Second Assistant of Mr. Cruise's Eyebrow Stylist" in a summer blockbuster movie. Budget restrictions aside, what is lacking is emotion - The Fountain is too cerebral for a really great and gripping experience for both brain and heart.

This could have been an incredible film, but at such a young age Aronofsky just didn't have it in him. On the bright side the ending is a complete knockout, Mansell's score steals the film, and repeated viewings make it better each time. On the down side, the film is overly ambitious and doesn't come close in terms of how intelligent DA wanted it to be. In the end this should have been an idea he developed throughout his career so he would be able to have a better budget, actors, and script.

A movie with a simple premise that it tries to lift into a transcendental theme. It doesn't hit quite the level that it's going for, in my opinion, but it does manage some very beautiful moments. Hugh Jackman is an excellent actor, and Rachel Weisz is quite good too. The biggest weakness is the script, which doesn't hit the parallels as well as it could - what did the self-flagellation scene add? - and does best when it gives the actors the most freedom.

This is one of my favorite films of all time. "The Fountain" is a very misunderstood film, and people do not like it because they do not understand it. This is one film I turn back once a year to re-watch, because every time I re-watch this film I find something new. Very complex and beautiful film.

It doesn't live up to its ambitions, but that's difficult with a film that aims so incredibly high. The performances, scope, score, and visuals are quite outstanding, even if it fails to reach the epic, masterpiece standards it tried for.

It wasn't a bad movie as much as it was disappointing. This started off rather slow and finally started picking up towards the 3/4 mark, only, at that time, you thought this was just going to be an epic and get really good. Then it ends. And you're like, "what the hell."

A film that at first defies and then exceeds your expectations. The cinematography is wonderful and the score is great as well. Ultimately the parts of the plot taking place parallel to the main one feel a little forced at times, but you get the impression that subsequent viewings will smooth over some of the nitpicks.

Man I wanna see the $70m version of this movie SO BAD. Conceptually fantastic (somewhat pompous, but obviously earnest) but let down a little by the short length and occasionally silly effects. Most of the visuals are amazing, however, and the score is killer. Wish the present-day scenes were a little more gripping as they're really the emotional lynchpin. Dialogue isn't great either. But a very admirable movie, even if its reach extends its grasp.

The Fountain is about 3 paralleling stories, each in a different time period and setting. This movie has wonderful acting, a good script, and an exquisite story. I absolutely loved this movie and it left me in heart felt tears.

Great film. A bit different from his other work, but still quite enjoyable. Loved the soundtrack. Kronos Quartet is as impressive as ever. I usually don't like Hugh Jackman, but he pulled it off I think.

"The Fountain" is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen (visuals AND music). As for content, it's hard for me to give the movie a very high score, because the story is just so undeveloped... I understand that this movie is more of a meditation and is not supposed to provide us with any concrete answers. But I think too much is open for interpretation and the story comes out unfocused and just way too abstract. It's still an interesting, incredibly beautiful and a very unique experience
