A brisk, plucky, smart, 80some-minute horror film that takes its metaphor all the way, doesn’t retreat from its ideas, and everyone seems to be having a great time. One of my favorite things. Plus it’s 90% practical effects creature body horror, and the mother here is one of the most punchable human beings I’ve seen in a very long and very full-of-punchable-people while. The more I sank into the film the more it delivered. The more I think about it the more I like it.

There are not a whole lot of Finnish horror movies around, so whenever they do happen, I usually watch them at some point. Hatching has a very original idea with how the monster comes to be and the monster design is great and creepy. Especially the way it starts to develop over the course of the story is effective, but the underlying meaning of the monster itself (and what it represents) is a little bit too much on the nose sometimes.

They fuck you up, your mom and dad. There's a barely suppressed rage under the perfect instafiltered exterior of this movie that makes it work even when it reveals its central metaphor very early on. The excellent practical effects don't hurt either. There could have been more depth to the story, as it is we're pretty much along for the ride just wondering which ending they'll pick, but it's definitely worth it.

Feels like a defiant denouncement of films such as The Babadook and We Need to Talk About Kevin. You can almost hear Bergholm asking "And where do you think those monsters come from?" and then delivering this masterwork that ascends to loftier heights than even Black Swan. The brilliance is in the seamless tonal shift from almost farcical comedy to the kind of horror that transcends boogeymen and monsters under one's bed. A ferocious tour de force that wields nuance with a heavy hand.

Hatching was pretty good to be the first full feature flick for Hanna Bergholm. The directing and cinematography (by Jarkko T. Laine) were top notch. Though in the story there was here and there interesting ideas, the horror part of it did not serve much new we haven't seen before in the genre. To be honest I went to see the film because of the ingenious Finnish title; that was brilliant game of words.

Though the world of the film and some of its inhabitants cross at times into caricature, Hatching’s visceral impact is formidable, bringing nature, red in beak and claw in the most literal sense, to the placid, prosperous, plastic suburbs.

A not so sutil story about a girl being pushed too hard. The monster works but I felt that there was not enough horror. The mother is the worst person in the world.

I'm left with a brainworm of thinking how the story would have gone had the protagonist been a late teen/young adult and there'd been more contention between the mom and the daughter and the mom's boyfriend (Nordin) who had stellar chemistry with the protagonist. Now the drama was a little meh, not terrible. Horror definitely was not there. This is an allegorical drama.

Senenin en absürt korku filmi. Porselen 1 hayat yaşayan evli mutlu çocuklu ailemiz, evine karga girmesi sonucu hayatları değişecektir. Evin küçük kızı, karga yavrusunu Aleyna Tilki ayısıyla büyütünce, evde korku dolu anlar başlar. Çılgınca 1 iş. Alfred Hitchcock'un kuşlar filmine gönderme yapan film, korkuyu hissettiriyor. Ailenin kendisi kadar film de sofistike. Filmin sonunda, oy anam oy. O sen olsan bari. Sen olsan bari o.

"Hatching" is a promising debut from director Hanna Bergholm, with outstanding performances and exceptional production design. While the film falls short in some areas, it remains a thrilling and engaging coming-of-age story that will appeal to fans of the genre.

I had very hard time to follow the movie. I couldn't find a logic continuity at the plot at all, made zero sense and never managed to capture my interest in the slightest bit. On the other hand, it just using the usual clichés for producing the "horror" feeling to the viewer, you've no doubt seen a million times before. A waste of time.

Well if this isn't the most gosh darn hysterical and weirdest movie about puberty I ever saw. Hitchcock's moms ain't got nuthin' on this one I'm telling ya.

Solid addition to the small group of Finnish genre films. Skillfully directed debut from Bergholm; looks good and has a solid script, but it all feels a bit familiar; as if you put some Lynch, Cronenberg, Burton and "Let the Right One In" in a blender. Creature FX was OK but a bit distracting. Scares are placed exactly as you’d expect - although I have to say that the very ending took me by surprise. Acting: Heikkilä is good as the mother and Solalinna is very impressive in her first role(s).
