Really dated and bordering on ridiculous. Ann Todd gives another awful performance, she is just so unlikable. I also have to say Ivan Desny looks like an ugly Orson Welles. Lean's worst.

A fascinating take on the infamous trial and life of the young and cunning socialite Madeleine Smith. The portrayal is accompanied by the necessary sinister undertones throughout, and has a rather marvellous script. My only complaint is that I think they didn't go as deep and as dark as they could have. Can be somewhat excused considering that this was released not many years after the war.

Stilted, poorly acted drama that tries to move from a romance in to some sort of murder mystery courtroom drama and in doing so feels unnatural and clunky. It's all a bit silly really, and is bookended by a couple awful and completely superfluous bits of narration.

Interesting account of a notorious 19th century murderess--and a very sympathetic one. Ann Todd is fine here--she should have been a bigger star.

This movie was not well-received when it came out, and is considered one of Lean's disappointments even today. I disagree. It's no masterpiece, and it starts off kinda slowly, but besides functioning well as human drama and being handsomely mounted and shot, it's a reminder of what lucky dogs we all are to be living in the 21st century instead. It also (avoiding spoilers here) boasts one very nice touch at the end. You don't see movies end like that anymore

WEBRip no MakingOff.

Kinda dead inside, but Lean goes a long way, as expected.

Well acted, well shot, well... boring. While the stage was set, David Lean didn't find the magic that draws you in to the story about Madeleine (1950).

Rather plain and unexciting re-telling of very interesting events. It starts off well enough (though with some hilariously silly dancing and intensely mispronounced French) but the interest wanes. Too bad, because it feels like the story would lend itself to a more critical, even satiric, point of view but it stays a bit too neutral and nice. Ann Todd once again proves she isn't the most exciting actress (as well as twice the age of the character she is playing).

Turns into quite the compelling little drama.
