Stylistically, this is the stand-up concert film that all future stand-up films and television specials emulate. Immensely influential, and for good reason: this is the funniest 80 minutes of stand-up comedy ever recorded in any medium, and Richard Pryor is a goddamn beast of a performer.

Man, this is still really funny. The John Wayne bit was my favorite.

Seen: 2. Some of the material doesn't work the best, like the boxing bit. But Pryor's conversational style flows so well and is perhaps the best of all time. It is on full display here.

Comedy legend Richard Pryor was a master of act-outs, his animated delivery elevating this 1979 special to a largely hilarious, even transfixing ride. That's not to say that the material itself isn't funny, but it's his performance, oozing energy and swagger, that makes this most memorable.

Pretty solid but some of the parts just went on too long.

Funny stuff, it's always hilarious to hear Pryor imitating white people or Chinese people. A lot of the comedy comes from the pain (mostly physical pain) Pryor experienced in his life and he sells it well. Funnier than 'Live on the Sunset Strip', but not as good since there's no mind-expanding moments like "do you see any niggers here?" -- it's basically just a flat run of jokes, but it's, for the most part, funny.

Pryor in his prime is one of the funniest standup comics I have ever seen. He's on cocaine, he's full of confidence and that feeling of success that many people find with money and fame. Usually Pryor does a lot of ramblings in his acts, but there are none here. His impersonations of animals are terrific.

The sheer force of Priors charisma has burnt this into my psyche. Even if you don't find it funny ( you likely will) it's a great performance.

It started and ended like a boxing fight in which Pryor was 100% victorious.

Pryor is in peak form, playing language, facial expressions and physical movement like notes in a thrilling hard bop jam session. In fact, he slips so effortlessly in and out of characters--each one markedly different, each one sharply drawn in mere moments--that the film becomes evidence that Pryor could have become one of the greatest character actors of his generation.
