Mangrove

A soul shaker. McQueen's keen poetic eye adds the exact extra dynamic needed to elevate this already great courtroom drama into something truly powerful.

Wow this movie really puts Trail of the Chicago 7 (2020) to shame huh? To say Mangrove is masterfully directed, with all its amazing little touches and zoom ins to hands twitching and fingers tapping and long slow close ups, would still undersell it. McQueen is able to covey so much emotion and extra detail through these little touches, that while the movie doesn't take any wild turns, I felt like I cared more about these activist and hated the police in this movie more than other similar film

Renders The Trial of the Chicago 7 woefully insufficient by comparison. It's mind-boggling what McQueen was able to pull off here. His vision isn't diluted in the slightest working within this format. Truly one of the finest filmmakers of his generation.

Riveting. Heart pounding and emotionally charged drama with fantastic direction, performances, and cinematography.

Flagrantly didactic screed is well crafted and well performed, even if it does tend to fall in to the trap of over simplification of its characters and arguments (especially the opposing ones) – this leaves the odious villains of the piece one dimensional, if easily hissable, but also negates their more truly ugly and venal tendencies. Still does an effective job of transporting the viewer back to 60s/70s Britain, and while somewhat familiar, the courtroom scenes pack their requisite punch.

Good take on institutionalized racism and police brutality in London, where the sense of community provides much better material than the -- of course, gripping -- well-shot courtoom drama. Performances are just spot on.

Very good start to the series, although it takes a while to get going. Interesting to see this coming out in the same year as Sorkin's Chicago 7.

Much better than 'The Trial of the Chicago 7'.

it becomes so much more than a conventional courtroom drama with the way it foregrounds the characters and the collective rather than the courtroom antics - also who knew you could stay clear of the disadvantages of overt didacticism and melodrama when you move the camera? i would say sorkin should take note, but even good direction could not save that man from his bullshit.
