Spoilers: I loved the movie until the end but the ending really pissed me off. I hate how they just justify and even glorify Sean Penn's character and how they just tie it up to "yeah well sometimes you have to do bad things."

It's been years since I've seen it, so I don't recall how it holds up. But my theatre experience was great - a riveting, uncompromising picture. Wish it had won instead of "Million Dollar Baby".

Not bad, but horrifically over-rated. Definitely not Eastwood at his best, or Tim Robbins for that matter. Or anyone. Mildly enjoyable, but Eastwood's direction and the incredibly annoying score often intrude on what is already a baggy and often cliched film. Like I say, mildly enjoyable, but I can't understand why it was so acclaimed on its release...

Apallingly overrated. This same story has been told dozens of times. A few Boston accents and Sean Penn do not a masterpiece make.

A tedious melodrama that takes itself way too seriously. Sean Penn is annoying. Tim Robbins tries to do his best with his anguish-ridden shade of a man for a character.

Mystic River is a film that's beautifully painful to look at. Its characters and themes hit you hard, and even if it is a bit heavy-handed at times, it's sure to leave you just as devastated as its characters are.

One of Clint Eastwood's most shining moments as a director. Powerfully acted, beautifully written and shot, this film about three old buddies and the tragic trajectory of their lives hits home on several levels. Wait for the end of the film. This one will haunt even after the theatre curtains have fallen.

A very emotionally involving film. Brilliant storyline and amazing acting. Awsome performance from Sean Penn (but then when isn't his acting awsome?!) Brilliant directing from Mr Eastwood. If you haven't seen this then I urge you too, if you have then you (should) know how awsome it is.

I found this movie to be pretty engaging with an honest, true performance by Penn and Tim Robbins. Kevin Bacon did the best he could. I loved to two thug brothers too.

Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden deliver phenomenal performances. The sensitive topic of dissociative identity disorder is methodically handled with care. That being said, I find this film to be overhyped due to poor writing and predictability. The film leaves you with a feeling of dissatisfaction and missed potential.

One of Clint Eastwood's best films. Right away, from the first scene, it grabs you and you can't turn away until the end. It's essentially a murder mystery, but told in a very original way. Penn and Robbins are great. The subplot with Kevin Bacon's wife seemed unnecessary, as did the final scene with Sean Penn and Laura Linney. But otherwise very, very good.

There is ignorant innocence and the innocence that 'knows'. This movie leaves you with the nauseating feeling that the latter is not possible, that there is no redemption.

I expected so much more from this film. It lacked coherence, suspense, a sense of foreboding that really should have been there. Not Penn's best work, but I thought Tim Robbins was quite convincing, though a bit not nuanced

Mystic River is an amazingly well-done noir thriller, spear-headed by three fantastic lead performances. Penn, Bacon and Robbins turn in performances of a lifetime and I was on the edge of my seat almost from beginning to end. One of the best movies of the decade from Eastwood here, yet I can't decide wether or not the final 10 minutes were weirdly awkward or brilliant. I guess you can easily say this needs more than one viewing to settle

Good acting throughout I thought, but it's one of those movies where the ending is just so frustrating. Not necessarily a bad ending, but one that will make you feel empty/let down for lack of a better phrase, and I was not a fan of that Jimmy/Annabeth scene at the very end during the parade. Would recommend though. EDIT: the more i sat and thought about it the more i liked it so bumping from 80 to 85. scientific i know

Mystic River is a powerful and extremely well acted movie. Sean Penn is at his best, as is Eastwood behind the camera. The movie has a fog that hangs over it, much like Zodiac. The atmosphere is just spot on. As is the pacing, which is fairly slow to say the least, but acts as a way to build tension which plays along well with the dreary atmosphere.

One of the best movies released on 2003 and the best movie what Eastwood is directed after brilliant "Unforgiven". Great mix of different movie genres but the main tone is dark, really dark. Watch it and you remember it forever.

Sean Penn is one of my favorites. His portrayal of a father searching for the truth whilst blinded by rage and sadness is to be commended. The particular scene in which his daughter's body is found is so emotionally gripping and realistic that It is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think upon this movie. One of my favorites for sure.

This movie really frustrated me. The performances were very strong, but I just felt that the story was too contrived and didn't play for the truth, people don't really act that way in my experience.

Clint Eastwood again comes through with another epic tale of tragedy in a small community. The acting is strong and the tension in the movie leaves you on the edge of the seat. This was by all means a work of art. The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer is very similar if not almost a companion piece to this movie and should be watched after or before. This movie definitely made everyone take notice of Clint's ability to direct.
