The Bechdel Test

As a fan of movies, there's a good chance you've heard of the Bechdel Test by now. The deceptively simple three-question checklist has become shorthand for talking about how women show up in film. A film passes the test if (1) it has at least two named women, and (2) they talk to each other, and (3) that is conversation about something other than a man.

Films featuring meaningful conversations between women

Passing the Bechdel Test doesn't make a movie good, and failing it doesn't make a movie sexist. Some of the most acclaimed, thoughtful films of all time fail it outright, often just because of how a story happens to be structured. For instance, Gravity is focused on a strong, accomplished female character, but she's floating in space alone. And it's also not a measure of how "feminist" a film is; a movie can clear the bar with a throwaway ten-second exchange about the weather.

So, it might be blunt and imperfect, but the Bechdel Test has persisted as a way to understand female representation on screen, because of how easy it is to apply. It doesn't tell you everything, but zoomed out across hundreds or thousands of films, it starts to say something real about which stories get told and how.

At Criticker, there are two collaborative collections focused around the Bechdel Test:

  • Passed the Bechdel Test — films where women get to talk to each other about something other than a man.
  • Failed the Reverse Bechdel Test — flips the test around (two named men, talking to each other, about something other than a woman). These are the films that don't clear that bar. It's a nice complementary check on the same idea from the other direction.

Curious how this plays out in practice, we ran the test against our current top 10 trending titles on Criticker. The results: only 4 out of 10 passed.

✅ Passed - Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, The Sheep Detectives, Supergirl

❌ Failed - Obsession, Backrooms, Project Hail Mary, Masters of the Universe, The Furious, Hokum

A quick glance at that last list makes clear that passing or failing is not an indicator of the film's quality. But we think it's a fun thing to notice. Check out the full collections, or peruse the lists at BechdelTest.com and see how your own favorites stack up.

The Trenchcoat Approach of spy-fiction. The opposite of Superspy. This is the Darker and Edgier spy game in that it does not romanticize the profession. It involves Dead Drops, brush-pasts, blackmail, and morally iffy things. Spying is stressful, and you may end up a paranoid alcoholic or worse. The plots are more gritty and morally ambiguous, spying reflects power politics between whichever nations or organizations are involved, and other nations and people are caught in the crossfire.

Recent Mini-Reviews Getting Love

5 Stars for schnofel's review of One Battle After Another
I can't overstate its directorial brilliance - from one cut to the next, it's joyful and aesthetically on point. World-class performers indulge in comical anxiety, tight suspense all around, and a jazzy, light-handed, absurd touch. Better than everything I see. But politically, it overreaches. While scarily topical, the 60s/Antifa revolutionaries serve an action thriller. And in this context, the gassing and burning of a Nazi is an unearned irony, one of many images too ugly to have to consider.
4 Stars for JLFM's review of Obsession
I found this very tiresome. Endless variations on “this girl is behaving really weird again” for an hour and a half. And credit where credit is due, Inde Navaratte sells the jarring dissonance of her needy, spellbound character with upsetting aplomb, but the up-and-down wavelength of that whole gimmick grows thin very fast.
3 Stars for Red Dell's review of Supergirl
Seeing this movie after hearing all the negative backlash for it makes me no longer want to trust general reviews anymore... from especially critics but also some audiences, cause y'all... this movie is great. The fuck... Y'all want a PERFECT movie, not just great... and that's NOT realistic and not fair.
3 Stars for Kavu's review of Obsession
Top shelf genre movie for the price of a shoestring. All main characters are underdeveloped and oversimplifed and STILL it works as well as it does.
3 Stars for Bene's review of The Furious
Martial arts directors and choreographers have been gunning for THE RAID (with which this shares two cast members and some choreo for a minute or so) for 14 years at this point, and this is the first time anybody got close. Might be the new benchmark. Fun side note: a friend and I debated wether or not one scene was a homage to the Jet Li-vehicle MY FATHER IS A HERO, which led to me checkout what became of that kid…THAT KID GREW UP TO BE XIE MIAO, THE STAR HERE!!!
