While it's a fascinating story, I'm not convinced that anyone involved was ever a genius. We keep getting told how smart these people were, but at the end of the day all of their plans failed spectacularly. I suppose 'Evil Delusion' would not be as catchy a title.

Better than average. lol @ the annoyed, literal readings of the title. Y'all, titles are not necessarily to be taken as the authors' expressed opinions. Sometimes they're others' words, repurposed for a variety of reasons. This absolutely would not have been titled "Evil Genius" if Diehl-Armstrong hadn't used the phrase herself in denying she was one, and thus innocent. w/r/t to the late confessions, they're not "presented as fact"; the filmmakers are reasonably indicating their own partiality.

In the interest in dramatic development, it takes some liberties in its presentation and takes hard stances on what really happened even though the evidence is conflicting and open to different interpretations. Nonetheless, it is totally captivating and one of the more interesting studies of the criminal mind that you'll find.

This is the first true crime doc I've rated since listening to the podcast A Very Fatal Murder so I'll talk about that instead. A Very Fatal Murder may be the best true crime media made since The Thin Blue Line. Sure, Evil Genius is fine, but A Very Fatal Murder is a transcendent story about a murder that was very fatal. It was so deadly.

I had heard rave reviews about this true crime mini series but ultimately I found it to be a little underwhelming. So much of the longevity of the case appeared due to repeated failure of the various law departments to do their jobs properly, and many 'breaks' in the case occurred only when the criminals decided to confess. Also didn't like the way one individual was ultimately presented as innocent based on one dramatic late interview which directly contradicted an eye witness testimony.

I'm quite conflicted on this one because it's a crazy story that is fairly well presented for the most part but it shoots itself in the foot when it makes a couple of extremely poor decisions, and it comes off as rather tasteless and even morally reprehensible in crucial moments, including the ending.

By turns dry and overly sensationalised coverage of a true crime case that seems more a sordid freak show than a particularly enthralling or illuminating tale. Suffering from a bad case of Netflix bloat, this could have been a substantive feature-length piece rather than being dragged out over 6 hours (replete with dramatic cliffhangers), with too often a feeling of being taken the long way round to get to the end of the various plot threads (especially via Borzillieri’s pretentious narration).

Puts the "gross" in "engrossing" in so many, all very effective, ways. It's beyond disturbing to listen to Marjorie's ramblings and tirades, unnerving to watch this mystery unfold through so many different investigations, and most of all, shocking to see unmarred footage of a truly horrific death. This heist and its aftermath is something that no writer could ever come up with, and is a testament to the horrors the criminal mind can concoct.

Considering the audacity I'm surprised I'd never heard of this crime, and this four-part doc does a great job of slowly unveiling the story: beginning with the robbery then opening up to uncover all the players and the wider landscape. It's a fascinating premise that keeps you hooked but shoots itself in the foot slightly by leaving questions still unanswered and overselling with an unnecessarily grandiose title. 'Evil Genuis'? Perhaps 'Not as Thick as They Look' would have been a bit more apt.

Ultimately its a little sloppy in its presentation and use of late breaking information that is presented as fact, but in reality is hearsay. That being said, its very well made and presented and is a fascinating study on crime and psychology.
