For a Technicolor children's film from the time, this film has incredibly bare, dour set design. I did like the actors and the music, even though the second act boasts a painfully overlong musical interlude that makes the Marx Brothers look on-point.

Rather interesting to see something that manages to occasionally be so wonderful and yet so disturbing and frankly kind of annoying all at once. The green guys with the deformed instruments were particularly nightmarish.

PIECE OF CRAP!!! That's what it is! I can't believe someone I know *CLARK NOVA cough cough* ranked this movie, this piece of crap movie up around the best movie of all time - Marnie. I already kicked him in the balls, I'm about to shove this movie up his fat a** and tear his head off. My name is Marnie and I approve this message.

Dr. Seuss' screenplay is mostly a showcase for some staggering art direction and costumes, since the songs (aside from "Ten Happy Fingers") and performances are so bland (Peter Lind Hayes honestly looks like he's about to fall asleep). But the young lead, Tommy Rettig, is very good (and gets extra points for simulating piano playing better than most actors, even adults), the asymmetrical blue dress was a knockout, and that famous big piano set piece was cult-status-worthy.

This movie should provide proof that not everything that is animated/drawn translates to live action. Perhaps Dr. Seuss' creations are wonderful in abstract form (especially when drawn by Chuck Jones as they were with 1964's The Grinch), but when his bizarre thoughts get acted out in an Orwellian dystopia such as this, the result is the stuff of nightmares. This is truly a train wreck of a movie and not one worth seeing through to the end as I forced myself to. Tune in for 5 minutes but no more.

This movie is seriously on acid. Probably one of the darkest works Dr. Seuss ever released. When I was a kid I was terrified of this - my mother only got me to sit through it after she explained that Dr. T (Hans Conried) was the same man who voiced Captain Hook and Boris Badenov.

I don't even know what to say. It's Dr. Seuss meets 50s sitcom. Lives up to the weirdness that implies, but also to the tedious saccharine characters and plot. This just isn't much fun to me.

1984 as adapted by Dr. Seuss; even has that iconic image of thee oppressed throwing a sledge. Unfortunately Seuss is undeserved by a production simply going through the motions with little understanding (Conried/Rettig being the exception). Combine that with the real world limitations on Seuss's designs and you get this. Still it's a valiant effort which gets more Seuss-ian in the finale. Recommend rental for the flashes of brilliance that can still be seen.

A weird and wild Dr. Seuss live-action film that unfortunately over stays its welcome as I checked out about halfway through.

The Neverending Story but written by Dr Seuss. A boy being forced to learn piano by his single mother dreams up a story of his escape from his evil teacher. Wonderfully quirky and dark in all the right ways with some just incredibly fun musical numbers even with all the cuts that were made. Hans Conried is delightful as the vile Dr Terwilliker who hates everything except the piano

This one really surprised me! It is along the lines of "The Wizard of Oz" or "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". It's a colorful adventure and a musical.

59 because of weirdness & creativity of art direction, but the characters weren't captivating, nor was the plot. Not even bad enough to love for that, but mostly just annoying & shallow.

Co-written by Dr. Seuss this has a fantastic creative production design. Although the central idea about a boy dreaming about his strict piano teacher is inspired the plot is too thin to really captivate me, besides being amazed by all the creativity on display. Some of the dance numbers hurt the pacing of the movie. Tommy Rettig does a fine job as the young lead. Hans Conried as Dr. T is the only adult actor who seems to be enjoying himself and steals every scene he's in.

A charmingly weird film from Dr. Seuss' mind, full of bizarre wordplay, musical numbers and a set design clearly influenced by 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'. It's a slight film in some ways, but I wish more children's films where this sweet and strange.

Dr. Seuss' only feature-film script was for this strange fantasy about a boy tangling with his fascistic piano teacher. Unfortunately, the story is too thin for a feature film, and the expected Seussian surrealism only comes in patches; Roy Rowland's flat direction doesn't help. Still, Tommy Rettig makes an amiable hero, and Hans Conried is amusing as the mad Doctor. Interesting (if underfunded) production design, and good songs; the poignant "Little Kids" and the "Dungeon Song" stand out.
