Paul Newman wanders in and disrupts an already dysfunctional family. Though there are some clever exchanges of dialogue and many sexual implications, I felt this was a bit dated. I disliked the near-caricaturization of the South, and most of the acting was pretty weak. The exception and highlight is Orson Welles, playing a particularly despicable brute who dominates an entire town and its people.

Why is it that when Hollywood looks at Faulkner it sees Tennessee Williams? Welles hams it up, and Newman tries to make it through on cold blue eyes and sweaty sexuality alone. Only Angela Lansbury seems to know what this is about, and that in itself is not enough. Martin Ritt provides his usual lacklustre direction.

Sort of like a less stagy Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which would be a good thing, except it's marred by an ending that goes to ridiculous lengths to tie up all the loose ends. Welles is fantastic and the otherwise so-so film completely comes to life everytime he's on screen. There's sadly a few too many things working against him, not least Woodwards wooden performance (pardon the lameness, but that's the only word that truly covers it) and the fact that nothing here feels like Faulkner.

Standard southern melodrama elevated by its cast; Newman and Woodward have electric chemistry together; Welles does his best Burl Ives impression and Lansbury is fine (if fleeting) as an unlikely love interest for Welles. Jazzy Alex North score and unusually provocative dialogue at times is hampered somewhat by echoes of better films with similar subject matter (HOT TIN ROOF comes immediately to mind).

Jesus, Welles open your mouth a little more. Can barely understand you.

There's no reason at all that Clara would marry Ben.

THE LONG, HOT SUMMER boasts a fantastic cast: Paul Newman (who won Best Actor at Cannes), Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick, and Angela Lansbury. They're all excellent, as you'd expect, but one co-star outshines them all: Orson Welles, as the local baron Will Varner. Bloated and gray, boisterous, imperious, and semi-coherent, Welles is great fun to watch, and single-handedly makes the film worthwhile; it meanders a bit, but writing, directing, and production are alike worthwhile.

If you told someone this film was about Orson Welles courting Paul Newman so he would impregnate Welles' on-screen daughter then they'd likely look forward to watching the movie. But alas, they would be disappointed, as was I. Sure, Newman and Remick are easy on the eyes and Welles has some entertaining outbursts, but beyond that there is not much to like. Everyone, even those with real talent (Welles, Newman, Lansbury), phoned in their performances to sometimes unintentional comic effect.

Newman was charming, Welles was mumbly and greasy, and Remick was relegated to a background character (though appropriate compared to the less attractive Woodward---baby bangs were a tragic era). Cat on a Hot Tin Roof did it better. Everyone just ignores the murderous son at the end. Newman and Welles had better sexual tension. Fav scene: Clara making some poor black boy carry the muddy rug with her to Ben's cabin, then I was held in suspense until Ben finally offered the poor boy watermelon.

Pretty boring. Did not recognize Foghorn Leghorn as Orson Welles. Not sure who this movie is for.

Viewed June 14, 2019. Faulkner distilled into a 50s melodrama turns out to be a whole lot of fun.

Pauline Kael, right as usual: "Hugely entertaining. [...] Ben Quick is one of those arrogant-on-the-outside, vulnerable-on-the-inside roles that Newman could do better than any other movie actor, and he and Woodward have some electric, strong scenes together." The entire cast is appealing, especially Lee Remick, though, for my money, the picture belongs to Orson Welles - he tears into his role as the patriarch and takes no prisoners.

Handsome drifter sidling into town, portly businessman with his finger in all the apple pies (and in Welles' case, quite the tan), reckless driving, obligatory county fair scene, lots of sweat... there was a definite pattern to these ‘50s small town melodramas. This is not one of the best, but very watchable, with a mesmerising Newman, in his breakthrough year.

Coleção Folha Grandes Astros do Cinema.

This is an enjoyable drama with a nice ensemble cast. Both Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward give good performances in this film. The script has some good and some predictable moments. Overall I would recommend this film.

I was a bit taken aback by Welles's over the top performance, but it grew on me. Lee Remick is gorgeous, and Paul Newman is great a playing Paul Neman.
