What is this movie? It's really weird, but I don't think that's by design. In terms of story, there's not really one to speak of; in terms of character, there's no development and the only thing to say is that every one of them is weird and doesn't know how human interactions work, and the dialogue jars the ear like mad and sounds like it was written by some sort of software rather than an actual person. I think this movie tries so hard to be quirky, but it's just odd and not in a good way.

Silly, but less annoying than expected. Just a self-pity story about a millennial in her late 20s moving back home after failing at arts college, thinking she is not loved by anyone, then finding out is not the unicorn with his overwhelming love is what she needs, but reconnecting with his parents and finally letting herself be loved. Larson's direction does't provide much more than average indieness. At least her charisma makes it watchable.

It's cute, but the tone is weird. I feel it should be aimed more at tweens, but the occasional bad language and adult situations make it seem like it's a film for teens and adults. That results in a bunch of characters who are forcefully awkward, stunted growth grown-ups.

I think there's a decent movie buried in Larson's directorial debut, but it's vainly struggling to emerge from all the other movies that are jammed in with it. Her laid back romance with Athie, which involves her discovering self-worth despite her apparent real world failures is somewhat compelling, but all the unicorn stuff is just not. It's a movie I ended up liking despite all it's messy baggage.

Is this some sort of personal film or something?

An OK watch with a few scenes that made me smile but it could've been so much better. It touches on themes like growing up, coming to terms with your childhood and learning to love yourself but it's wishy washy on the points it wants to make, as if the makers didn't dare to go all in. Surprisingly it just lacks inspiration and plays it safe. The cast though is great, Larson and Athie have good chemistry and the score is beautiful. Could've been a gem but merely scratches the surface.

A pleasant surprise. It's extremely well acted and has a great sense of humor. Unfortunately, it is let down by a generic and overly sappy ending. Still, there's a decent bit of fun to be had here.

A little unevenly constructed at points, and at others a bit too on the nose (horn?), but like quirky Kit and her krafty kaboodle, it's mostly just wonderfully, colourfully odd, humourous, and heartwarming (see the fantastic vac presentation with her adorable two sidekicks), with an interesting ending that adds some nuance to the creativity/individuality/child-like-ness vs. conformity/uniformity/grown-up-ness theme throughout. Larson and Athie have lovely chemistry and the music's great too.

It's a tired saying but the movie is way better than it has any right to be. The main reason being the cast. They really did a great job of elevating a story that could have otherwise been really hokey and lame. Seriously Brie Larson is the perfect lead for this movie. Mamoudou Athie also had a surprisingly good performance. The two of them had wonderful chemistry. My only complaint is the mystic vac presentation. Comparatively speaking the quirkiness in that scene felt forced and over the top.

Brie Larson is great in the lead role in this film. The rest of the cast also do a good job with this material. The script is interesting and not predictable. Overall I would recommend this film.

70 is a low rate that I give to movies that I am probably going to watch again, but that they actually didn't impressed me. Unicorn store is an elegant movie. I loved the acting and the photography. Well, in the end I can't but think "what's the point?" Was all in her head? Was really there an unicorn waiting for her? I don't know. What's the ultimate message? If the main character were a 14 yo it would be better. That's not the story tho, I know. So... IDK. Seriously, what's happening here? :-O

Hilarious, charming, surreal, disturbing - I was enthralled and hope Brie Larson makes a dozen more like this.
