In an Ashkenazic shtetl in Poland, Yentl Mendel is the boyishly klutzy daughter and only child of long widowed Rebbe ("Talmud Teacher") Mendel, who teaches Talmud (a codification of Jewish Law) to local boys - and to Yentl, but secretly because girls were not allowed to learn the law in those days... Wait, Barbara Streisand is Jewish?? I was thinking this was the worst case of an actor's vanity project, but then I remember James Franco directed a ton of Faulkner adaptations and we are also only a few months removed from The Idol. Still, this isn't that bad. Yes, it's overwrought. Yes, the only person allowed to sing is Streisand. Yes, that music isn't good. But, add the pieces together and it kind of, sort of works.

Yentl...Certainly not on the ears, having to listen to a cat being tortured for 2+ hours does not sound like fun!!

I found the premise of Yentl pretty silly. 40-year-old Barbra playing a teenage woman passing as a scholarly boy who sings her monologues takes a bit of imagination. The love stories are solid but everything around it might not be my jam. Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving are both snacks in this.

This really slaps! It's a great, horny, clever film about gender and queerness that even made me interested in a romantic triangle (non-monogamy really would have solved everything here, except for the sexism of the - very sexy - love interest Mandy Patinkin). The musical part is not the best (or most varied), but does have a couple of absolute bangers. Its' beautifully shot and Babs does a great job writing + directing.

The best part of Yentl is Deadpool 2 calling out Frozen for stealing its theme song.

Another self-indulgent Barbra vehicle.

Screenplay and make-ups are unlogical and bad but the idea of getting three strongfull theme together is nice. These themes are; Indipented Intellectual Woman's Journey in Society and Forbidden Love Triange and Musical Assets And these are strange things to mix but ı think suprisingly barbra streisand make this solid. I Love it, and ı considered as a fine classic..

It's a film with a lot of great pieces, but they don't quite fit together. The music may be good, but it doesn't fit the character, which in turn undermines some of the inner conflict of the romance as well as Yentl's central struggle for pursuing her love of knowledge. It's still a compelling story and there's enough good to make it work, but it lacks the depth to make it meaningful and complex.

Top badass moment? Barbra Streisand's character Yentl/Anshel sticking it to 'The Man'. At a time and place when women weren't allowed to go to school but basically had to just hang around at home making dinner and babies, Babs most defiantly gives the finger to all and sundry. That's badass! 0 cats and 0 decapitations.

Deeply misunderstood film which has some amazing musical numbers and cinematrography. Rather cerebral which can make it seem long but I thought it was great

This Funny Boy film may make some yearn for _Funny Girl_, when more disciplined filmmakers had Streisand's ego in control.

Boring drama about Babs secretly strapping down her cans in order to learn secret Jewish stuff that only boys were allowed to know. Skip it.
