This is a series that came just a couple years too early. I can often see the conflict between the writers trying to make something interesting or challenging and the network backing them down into the same rote, predictable product. Every attempt from the early HYDRA reveal to criticizing the 2016 election in later seasons is inevitably tamed into boring nothingness. This doesn't mean there aren't some redeeming characteristics, it just means to expect the expected and nothing more.

Held of from watching as I have been dissapointed by TV superhero and spinoffs on tv especially the DC crap. Finally started watching last month after they had been out for 5 seasons. Was pleasantly surprised and hooked. Good characters, plots, CGI, pacing, and a quite decent suppresion of corniness and tv series cliches. A sort of simplified Game of Thrones where noone is really a good guy (apart from the Fitz Simmons maybe). Worth watching

[through season 7] A wonderful show that was largely ignored because its earliest episodes make it naively seem to be a monster-of-the-week style of show. Late in season 1, it is revealed not to be. Probably my favorite thing in the MCU.

Really great show from start to finish. Some seasons are obviously better than others, and I wish they connected more with the MCU than they ended up doing, but this show had enough great characters and storylines to stand on its own. I'd love to see some of the characters rejoin the larger MCU later on Disney+, if possible.

S01: Coulson's resurrection & post Winter Soldier Hydra fallout. Takes a while (half a season) to get going. S02: Inhumans. Daisy backstory and powers, make for a more interesting season arc. -Some clichés, patchy acting, and filler. +Bobbi & Hunter. S03: Conspiracy and alien problem. Strong season. S04: Ghost Rider & Androids. Short story arcs (or Pods) make the pacing much better. Best season. S05: Time travel & apocalypse. A little bloated, but good. S06: Evil Coulson?

Either a sci-fied up, less entertaining version of Alias or the world's worst Avengers sequel, whichever you prefer. Even at its best it mostly feels flat and insular, with attempts at Whedon-y Firefly/Buffy-esque dialogue almost always landing flat. A few extras point because it does get a little better after the Hydra twist in Winter Soldier, though that plot, too, grows dull before it's done.
