A good performance from Greta. Julianne's character is a bit too much, though, and we've seen this sort of thing just about a million times before. However, if you're yearning for something Woody-ish with a twist of quirk, this will fit that bill. I haven't got any points worth bringing up about Rebecca, Ethan, Maya and Bill, but referring to all of these famous people by their first name makes me feel slightly more impressive, so I figure that I might as well do so.

Rebecca Miller makes movies that feel lived-in and way out there -- two modifiers that don't often co-exist. Maggie's Plan, Miller's fifth feature following Angela, Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, could be conventionally labeled a New York romance for a generation bookended by Woody Allen and Noah Baumbach.

Ok dramedy, but the N.Y setting and cast of Hawke, Moore, Gerwig makes you think of films of Allen, Linklater and Baumbach -- and Miller's film is not in that league. The premise sounded better than the actual execution and IMO Maggie's Plan could have used a bit more sinister scheming. Still, it's not a bad time waster if you've seen the better ones by Baumbach & co. already and the winter setting is always a plus.

What has become typical Greta Gerwig, interesting, but not especially so.

Excellent in the first half and then it devolves into a mess of absurdity

Nothing works here. Gerwig is terrible. Nobody is funny. The script belongs to Den Hague, the directing is blasphemous and my gosh, the movie wastes a Kathleen Hanna cameo. Why? Why?

A love triangle between Gerwig, Hawke and Moore with each character flawed in different ways and not really knowing what they want. For me it is Hawke's character, John, who is most interesting; well perhaps that's not the right word, so let's go with most 'annoying in a good way' (you do really just want to punch him in the face some times). Moore's character is a caricature in many ways, but it's Julianne Moore so she somehow pulls it off. The backdrop of academia is kind of interesting.

Featuring very good performances from its three leads, who all lend more to their characters than the script ever does, it still fails to leave much of an impact or make the impression it's trying so hard to. With this premise on top of such a strong cast, it should be a serio-comedy slam dunk, but it's not. Instead, it's a largely boring & plodding movie with a few decent laughs & a pretty weird ending, which is disappointing.

That has to be the worst Danish-English accent ever to be put on film.

A movie that while never bad feels purposefully directionless, which in turn works thematically but not narratively. Greta Gerwig is delightful as always, and generally if it wasn't for the high caliber of the cast I don't think the movie could work. The end result feels as if Nora Ephron tried to make a Woody Allen/Noah Baumbach movie. It has a sort of relatable real life nature to it while also maintaining a hokey sentimentality. The ending feels rushed and by extension mawkish and unbuyable.

Feels like an imitator of much better movies. The cast is great but can't save this script, not bad, just phony.

Pleasant enough, if slight, diversion. Neither the writing nor direction are particularly strong, but the actors are fun to watch, especially Gerwig and Hader. Ethan Hawke's character is so whiny and self-involved that it made me forget how much I usually like him. Julianne Moore's wandering, pseudo-German accent provides some unintentional amusement... she sounds--and even looks a bit like--Madeline Kahn's Lili Von Shtupp.

Good times, to be sure. The comedy, though of the screwball variety, remains interestingly understated. The entire thing is well-structured, often amusing, and with a fair measure of humanity to the whole thing. This isn't tip-top Gerwig (and let's be honest, she is the primary interest here), but it is plenty enjoyable nonetheless.

Cringeworthy. I already wasn't a fan of Hawke and Maggie's Plan didn't change that. Gerwig is just weird and I don't get the character. The character of Moore is way too much. There is a lot of overacting done here. Don't watch it, it isn't worth your time. 29/100.

A tremendously appealing cast gets a bit lost in the shuffle of MAGGIE'S PLAN, an over-plotted comedy of romantic errors that's pleasant, clear-eyed, and a bit out of touch. The movie's slightly misshapen structure fits its thesis about the unpredictability of love, but its naturalistic strengths are often undercut by a handful of contrived moments, as well as its halfhearted lampooning of bourgeois New York culture.

Sort of amusing in it's flimsy intellectual level, but only 'sort of'.... for this is a silly mess of love and marriages.

A good cast and mildly surreal plot don't necessarily make for a great comedy. There are a few funny moments but overall the film is rather forgettable. Also there is a well-comprised theme in the score, unfortunately the film uses it as a crutch for otherwise dry scenes, which after a while feels forced.

I enjoyed this. But it could be because it had that "real-life" drama feel to it, a kin to the "Before Sunrise", that I like so much...or maybe it's just Ethan Hawke. The cast is great, especially Greta Gerwig, who is an energetic and charismatic lead and the story is definitely best put as a screwball comedy/drama. Could have easily been a heavy drama but handled nicely with a touch of humour.
