Seems like the driving theme of Melies' works is that the Devil is a dick. Also, the moon will consume us all one by one.

Batshit crazy but in a way that makes you envy Méliès for being the first to go "Hey! Hand me a movie camera and I can do ANYTHING!"

Starts out completely normal for Méliès, then wow things take a turn for the creepy! One of his funnier shorts.

Criticker should really ditch the confusing name for this film's page and just call it "La lune à un mètre" to avoid mixups with "Le voyage dans la lune." In any case, it's amazing how far ahead of his contemporaries Méliès was with this film, which still holds up. It's also amazing how much better he got between this film and his similarly titled 1902 film.

Someone was tripping hard when they came up with this one. But Méliès entertains me more than any other 19th century filmmaker. Perhaps not a particularly high standard, but definitely notable.

Oh, it's one hellacious dream all right: Satan, babes from the moon, and The Fairy Queen for good measure. This is all as artificial as hell, of course, but it sure looks pretty. Also, I wish I was important enough for Satan to come after me personally, and for The Fairy Queen to have to come to my rescue. I'd leave out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for her

n.b. "A Trip to the Moon" [originally-- "La lune à un métre"] is Méliès' 1898 short, not to be confused with his "A Trip to the Moon" ["Le voyage dans la lune"] from 1902.
