A little sweeter and less prickly than usual for Holofcener, but this also means it's one of her most accessible and purely enjoyable films. That said, I do think she has a tendency to write dialogue that's a little on-the-nose in terms of the themes she's playing with. Those themes are always interesting, but sometimes they're presented in a way that's less than graceful. Still, this is never anything less than wholly enjoyable and everyone at my screening laughed a lot (myself included!).

I enjoyed the chemistry and interactions between Menzies and Dreyfus. They were a strong married movie couple that didn't need to go into absolute hysterics to make a compelling relationship. Also just strong performances in general, with Dreyfus obviously stealing the show. There was some heart, a few moments of laughter. I expected a little more from this but as it stands, it's a solid dramedy with a subject matter that's close to me.

There's something lacking in the resolution to the central problem(s) of Beth and Don, but I still found this to be very entertaining. Leans more on the drama side of dramedy, but the subtle comedy that is there is impactful, eliciting more than a few fits of laughter in my theatrical showing. I have to believe that Beth is writer/director Nicole Holofcener's avatar in this instance, but the performances felt so authentic and disbelief-suspending that I will absolutely seek out her other work.

Despite its predictable plot, "You Hurt My Feelings" is a charming and entertaining film with a fantastic ensemble cast. It's thought-provoking, funny, and heartwarming, with a tender examination of the lies we tell to protect those we love. Holofcener's strong direction and Louis-Dreyfus' superb performance make this a must-see film for fans of smart, character-driven comedies.

The trickiness, nuances, and contradictions of how we communicate are explored in such a funny and thoughtful way, wasting no time in its fair, humanising, yet often shifting approach to all its characters. It may seem like it’s coming from a very particular New York niche of the overly-sensitive types, though this film should come across as a universal tale as it covers a lot of ground in a small amount of time, digging deep without getting self-important or losing its humour.

I hated all the characters, and didn't find the jokes funny.

Another feather in Holofcener’s cap with lots of smart writing and excellent character work, elevated by a killer cast with lovely chemistry together. Funny and pleasant as expected.

A film about four creatives in long-relationships who have to understand their issues with communication is, understandably, not a high-octane thrill ride. But, it is pleasant, and it's nice to see a film about loving relationships with issues that feel realistic. I wasn't sure if the scenes with Louis-Dreyfus in her class were making fun of her students, and this uncertainty also carried over to my confusion of her abilities as a writer.

Fine movie! The premise is interesting but the movie only has 1 idea and the rest of the time is essentially fluff, which drags it down a bit

JLD gives a strong dramatic performance while Cross & Tamblyn steal every scene they're in, but Holofcener's tightly-written screenplay is the real star of You Hurt My Feelings. The film is understated with its comedy and delivers its drama in a non-melodramatic, low-energy fashion that reflects the reality of middle adulthood; a rarity in film, and rare still when done right. The film isn't particularly memorable, but is an enjoyable 90 minutes with a feel-good-ish ending.

It's okay, but it doesn't feel memorable. I do appreciate the more subtle sort of story and problems everyone is having, but it was maybe almost too downplayed at times to the point where I felt like I didn't laugh very much.

Cute little dramedy about the delicacy of being married and trying to make the one you love happy all the time, sometimes just failing miserably, like buying the wrong gifts, saying shit about her work. Not everything clicks -- the sister's character arc, for example --, but it feels honest and ends in a beautiful note -- mom and dad reading the first draft of their sons's play.

Some outstanding moments from JLD but overall a bit less natural than I'd hoped it would be. Dialogue was contrived in parts. too cleanly resolved.

A very down-to-earth and relatable (yet also funny) movie about adults dealing with their relationship stuff.

JLD is the sun around whom the rest of this film orbits. Her comedy manages to be smart while not feeling forced, even as the central situation here is a bit contrived. But the film does a nice job building off of her energy, with comic moments strewn throughout the subplots and a general warmth that pervades. I'm also pleased to see a film made for grown-ups that has received a decent theatrical run. Seems like more of a rarity these days.

My first Holofcener. What struck me the most was how good she is at hitting just the right tone. The problems of the rich and comfortable can often get cloying or uncomfortably myopic, but this felt just the right amount of removed while still retaining humanity and warmth. This tonal balance is produced by a sharp and funny script; dialogue always felt refreshingly true and original. Combine that with a brisk editing pace and great acting and you’ve got yourself a lovely, grown-up movie.

Nothing happens in this movie. It is very melodramatic and depressing. The attempt at comedy is always under the guise of some sad or ridiculous situation. It will put you to sleep.
