Biography: Born in Maine, John Ford followed his brother Francis to Hollywood in 1914 and directed his first film, The Tornado, in 1917. Ford learned the art of filmmaking in the silent era, often combining well-paced stories with poetic and mythic imagery. He made a seamless transition to sound, eventually winning the Best Director Oscar four times. He might be best known for his many films starring John Wayne, and 1956's The Searchers remains widely regarded as a masterpiece in the history of cinema.
