I've always found Gervais very funny but his previous attempts at the sentimental usually fell into sappiness, especially because he tends to pick songs which are too on the nose & just repeat what you're seeing. Even though the songs are still on the nose, this is amazing. He captures the chronic grief one feels after the loss of someone you can't live without so well that I assumed he himself had experienced this tragedy. The fact that he didn't & just imagined this puts him on another level

Found season 1 to be the best of the 3, with the last one a bit too sappy and without the funny moments of the first 2. But overall a good show about coming to terms with grief and loss.

Not easy to describe. I will say that Gervais takes the components of the idea of "bittersweet" to their extremes...and it's fantastic. As an actor, he proves himself to be fearless. Great cast, wonderful peripheral characters. This does not appear to be for everyone, but I loved it.

Absolutely the worst stuff of Ricky. Clearly, he is nothing without Stephen. Karl's own show is much better than this crap. Half of the episodes are just Ricky watching videos of his wife, keep telling stories about his wife to everyone and tries to show that he doesn't care about life. He literally just puts the fact that he is very sad and doesn't care about anything into our eyes. Plus what is that relentless ambient music at the background? Whole time! So mawkish! Horrible!

It offers a heavy handing of bitter, but also a soothing amount of sweet. Great drama in excellent balance with humor.

After Life contains Gervais' usual brand of pithy humour distributed throughout a drama that is grounded and relatable. His character arc, of coming to terms with his grief, is not new but is delivered with a certain amount of understated charm that makes it interesting. The show can be a little slow at times though. The 2nd season is less funny, and more poignant. Still worth the watch.

Even with that last episode (why Ricky why), this is a great show.

I will literally watch and enjoy anything with Ricky Gervais in it. He's like sex or pizza.....even if it's bad, it's still pretty good.

Twice now Gervais has become a critical voice for the voiceless, first for the animals, and now for those suffering through crippling grief. Audacious, apt humor and unprecedented insight into the subject of unbearable grief, and how to find hope when all you see is despair. Gervais is a brilliant mind, and this is by far the best thing he's ever created. This is one of the absolute most honest, profound, endearing, and insightful scripts I’ve ever encountered—TV or film.

I loved how Ricky Gervais depicts his world-view in this show. Definitely sth to think about. very close to my perspective on things.

If I become an arsehole, and I do and say what the fuck I want for as long as I want, and then when it all gets too much, I can always kill myself. It's like a superpower.

One of the better shows around. Hope there is a fourth season.

☆ This was really sweet. I mean it was cheesy and all that, but there were some touching moments and of course Gervais is hilarious in it too. He gets quite tender which I was surprised about, and has some wholesome monologue moments. Very quaint cast of unknown actors too. It's quite a soft show really. ☆

i thought gervais crawled up his own ass long ago, but here is his GROUNDHOG DAY and against all odds it works. characters who're usually the butt of his jokes are given pain and dignity, while the joker himself is lost, pathetic. there's still incongruous nastiness in there like it's embarrassed about its sentimentality (and the shoehorned hot button stuff is Not Good), but the slice-of-life character work is so well pitched and acted, so sincere and generous on the whole, i kinda loved it.

Not bad depressing humour, never over-trying with either the comedy or drama. It's a comfy and fairly small show, dealing appropriately with suicidal themes, though it never reaches a certain insightful or hugely comedic height. Given how season 2 ends, I suspect season 3 will lower this score.

Not quite my tempo

It never really hooked me and I enjoy most of what Gervais has to offer as a comedian and working actor. This just felt contrived, forceful with the overt lack of discipline in the way the lead characters speaks and acts. Not for me I guess. Perhaps it is one of the shows I owe a second change to.

Flatly directed, overly sentimental vanity project with a few funny moments and characters (Diane Morgan!). An improvement on Derek, but just another showcase on how integral Merchant was to the writing duo.

Recommended to watch alone, immediately after a break up and ideally with all pets housed with nominated carers. Highlight has to be the heroin purchase montage. Yea, I would have preferred the finale take a more depressing turn, but you get what you get. It was nice and bleak for the remainder. Are you ok Ricky?

Gervais's foray into more dramatic territory is comfortably above par but is far from a life-affirming revelation. Writing, directing and starring, he tackles the tonal variety in a competent manner and the show offers lots of resonant moments, yet all that is engulfed in a rather predictable story arc. Nevertheless, despite the message's familiarity or the obvious ways in which it's being conveyed at times, "After Life" maintains the weight that pertains to representing a true slice of life.

I loved everything about the season one except the ending. I think it's the best show he had ever created maybe. I love his works generally and I think this is also a brilliant story and direction. The ending of the last episode was botched and kinda cliche. I think if we're following a turn of events at a certain pace and suddenly everything gets happening faster with many cuts, it loses its consistency. But still so many fun situtions and insights.

O da genelde Gervais'in vasat oyunculuğuna takılıyor. Karikatürize karakterler ile karikatürize duygusallık şöleni. İnsanoğlunuın kayıp ile mücadelesi ile ilgili daha önce yeterince derin ve etkileyici bir dizi yapılmamış mıydı?

Beautifully shot with a healthy input from Ricky's usual world viewpoints (atheism / purpose / animal loving) but with a better executed emotional value than in Derek. This project felt less like Ricky just messing around and as though there was a stronger focus on its verisimilitude which was a pleasure to see. Ricky's acting was also stronger in this than in other projects but I still find it lacking in some instances (for non-comedic scenes). Overall, definitely worth a watch.
