I have to give this the edge over The Office, when it comes to Ricky Gervais' best work. It's the Cinephile in me. Comedic shows are always at their best when then can combine heart and laughter equally, and this is one of the best examples of that. These damn British shows keep leaving you wanting more, with their 6 episode series, and I hate it, but I guess that means it works very well. The celebrity cameos are great, but I'm torn picking a favourite, between Les Dennis and Shaun Williamson

The first season is hilarious. Feels a lot like The Office in terms of awkward humor, but with a different setting and a bunch of cool guest appearances. The second season changes direction a little as the character tries to further his career. I wasn't as much of a fan of the second season's format, but there are some genuinely great moments including the series finale.

Years ago, when I first saw Ricky Gervais in The Office, I didn't like him - but it was really the character he was playing was just annoying, right? In Extras, he plays a somewhat similar character, but, I think, it's more relatable and believable. I enjoyed his friendship with Maggie as well as the many guest appearances throughout the series. Oh and Stephen Merchant is always a hoot, too. I really enjoyed Curb Your Enthusiasm and found Extras to have a similar vibe.

The humor here is really uneven, with a few amazing clips (conversations with Sir Ian, Kate Winslet, and Daniel Radcliffe particularly) being unrepresentative of the general show. Don't expect that level throughout, but Andy and Maggie's friendship is wonderful and helps fill some of the rougher patches.

The first season was a laugh - the second depends too much on the stupid catch phrase.

If you like Gervais's "cringe" comedy, than you'll love this. A bit uneven, but when it's good, it's pretty great. If you watch only one episode, make it the one with Ian McKellen.

Extras is a little bit cringe-worthy, but that is the territory of which Gervais has made himself king. The guest stars really do make the episode they're in worthwhile. The David Bowie song is a personal highlight. The series ends on an optimistic high note with a tear-down of Big Brother, which is probably the best way it could have ended.

The masters of cringe comedy strike back. Each episode has at least one guest star attracting the attention, and some of these appearances (e.g. Kate Winslet) are brilliant, yet the high point of “Extras” ends up being the recurring characters. The show slowly but surely invests in them, culminating in the excellent special. There may be a couple of weaker (still good) episodes throughout, but the show can be great at combining humour, stupidity, drama, affection and biting social commentary.

Spot-on satire of where British TV comedy was heading (with Mrs Brown's Boys). Although the sentimentality is a little gross at times, this is an engaging comedy that has plenty of funny moments, many of them involving Stephen Merchant's agent character. Plus the celebrity cameos are too awesome. The last episode is the weakest and too on-the-nose, but the Christmas special is tremendous, one of the best and funniest commentaries on aspiring fame.

Gervais' work is always hit-or-miss for me because he's always pushing the limits of what you can do with a comedy. This was mostly OK with most of the funniest bits being "oscar winnner saying/doing something ridiculous." HOWEVER, the finale is an emotional masterpiece and the show earned ten more points of rating on that episode alone. Wow!

If I was rating this on the basis of its best celebrity cameos (Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan), I'd rate it through the roof. As is it's still a pretty funny sort of behind the scenes look at the industry sort of way, without the insufferable fucking fratboy smugness of Entourage.

It's no The Office, but it's still very clever and fun. Some failed jokes, but the good stuff outranks the bad

The finale is truly magnificent. Other episodes vary in quality, but the Les Dennis episode absolutely killed me. Sitcom is where Gervais should keep himself.

Based on a handful of random episodes, you don't get a sense of an actual person at the centre of the series beyond a generic sadsack so it feels like a sketch show. Obviously its strengths are the celebrities playing themselves, notably potential sex offender Patrick Stewart.
