This show was bloated and trying way too hard to be highbrow. I think that is my main issue with shows like this, the tone becomes inconsistent and it expects me to care for characters without giving me a reason to. However, I can't say that I wasn't entertained by it and that it wasn't a compelling thriller at points.

The problem (besides not enough swastikas) is that while the source material and premise are great, the lead protagonists are all awful. Their motivations are all over the place, they have no distinguishing characteristics and the actors behind them are not inspiring. On the other hand Rufus Sewell is fantastic, and his whole SS officer with a white picket fence life is the best part of the show. The quality picks up after the first season, although the series finale is shockingly terrible.

While at times slow, this is a show that crescendos to satisfying seasons ends. The premise is intriguing (as are most by PKD), though the drama does feel bloated at times. The 1st season is more focused on world-building and character drama, which pays off in the 2nd season with a stronger sci-fi link and better character arcs. Evans (Frank) and Davalos (Juliana) are mediocre, but Tagawa (Tagomi) makes up for it, and Sewell steals the show. You might even find yourself rooting for the Nazis.

Banality of evil, shades of grey, hope against all odds, infinite possibilities. This show masterfully portrays these themes and more over 4 seasons of film-level cinematography, deeply-layered performances and captivating dialogue. While scheduling conflicts and debatable cramming impact the final season a bit, High Castle as a whole is a magnificent tale of life over survival and love over fear.

Jumped ship after the pilot. It seemed to take a brilliant premise and fumble the execution right out of the gate. I might give this another shot in the future, but I have been told by many that it completely falls apart by the end, so why invest the time?

Interesting as a story with almost every professional cast except for lead actress Alexa Davalos The general atmosphere is very suitable for the topic and the course of events, but it lacks the reality of life The great similarity with 1984 in glacial subtraction

Liked the first season a lot. Rest was good enough to keep me watching. I'll just leave it at that.

Seasons 1-4: The "protagonist" is perhaps the least interesting character, but that's fine because others are done quite well and get plenty of screen time. It would have been fine without the final minutes of the final (season 4) ending, which is somewhat nonsensical.

Rating dropped at the beginning of S4 from 82 to 77 (never finished S4), then 75. In hindsight this was weaker than I initially remembered.

The characters transport a film that shows how great the world would be if, as it did in reality, America had won the war. The series seems to forget, though, what the allies' countries did in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Latin America short after the war. It's easier to show nazis being mean in order to silently celebrate US' victory and pretend it can't see how that same victorious country helped to perpetuate war and totalitarianism in the rest of the world.

Season one was okay, but dragged on way too long. Season 2 bored me after two episodes. It's not a bad show, but I give up. Feeling disappointing since I really love K. Dick.

End of season one: So far so good! Slow paced at times but the alternate history is interesting so I'll definitely give it another season. Liked the end of season twist too. || End of season two: really enjoyed season two, probably a little better than the first season.

Noticeably plain direction for starters, this is matched by middle of the road acting and a plot that relies too heavily on convenience/character ignorance. All is not lost, the show is set in a conquered USA, allowing for some between-the-lines commentary in the art direction - the jab at some all-American, suburban fascists & American geisha for example. TMitHC is a lot more Hallmark than its contemporaries however, almost like it's playing up the platonic 1950's family setting it exists in.

Some interesting ideas and an interesting backstory/mythology, but christ almighty is it SLOW. "Quality" television does not need to be slow and boring.

Takes bits form movies and does that cheap telly thing where no-one tells anybody anything in a way that makes no sense. Some fun, impressive world-building and Sewell made much of the cast look even worse than they were. "Ending" was a real kick in the balls.

About the only thing this does well is establish an oppressive atmosphere. The characters are unlikeable and wooden and the plot does very little to hook you. Only in the final few minutes of the first season do you get into any of the sci-fi aspects that I, personally, had been waiting for. Then it just ends. It's slow and padded like crazy and it seems like they are trying to set up for future seasons, but I doubt I'll bother watching them. (reviewed after season 1)

The scenes with the Japanese are atrocious. "Speak English, act really stiff, bow a lot, and keep playing with your I Ching sticks."
