This seems to lay the groundwork for the typical biopic. I say seems, because I am not well-versed in biopics prior to this one. But, this one manages to feel fluid and coherent, despite a look at Lynn's life that spans 30 years. Also, feels odd that a biopic was done about Lynn, and that she is still alive and making music 40+ years later. Sissy Spacek got a well-deserved Best Actress win, but I am surprised Jones didn't even get a nom. It's also weird to see a young-ish Jones.

It doesn't do much to break the mold of the typical biopic - rags to riches to struggles (infidelity, death, though no drugs here) and back again - so it relies on its performances. Fortunately, they're uniformly excellent, with both Spacek and Jones offering convincing embodiments of naive and soulful country hicks. If you can dig on country music and rural settings (I enjoy both), I see no reason you couldn't appreciate this.

I liked the performances, but overall it's pretty run-of-the-mill biopic about a musician. It's not bad nor it is it super awesome, but it passes the time and it certainly helps if you're okay with country music, obviously.

A general biopic of a musician propelled and oppressed by her own partner and the music industry. It's neither stirring in its critique, nor does it overdo this theme, but does come across as cosy, if milquetoast experience. Good performances from the leads, but I still found this to be a bit of a chore to finish -- the fact that I can't stand this kind of music (which features prominently) doesn't help.

Doesn't much deviate from the boilerplate music biopic, but at least the execution is without major flaws and the performances are really very good. It also generally avoids having scenes that wallow in self pity or feel overly dramatic, so it's a fun experience.

Spacek's subtle, powerful performance is a tour de force that elevates the film overall, which also benefits from the outstanding technical elements, especially the cinematography.

Not my style but not horrible. Too overdone but a good watch if you want to know what backwoods south is like.

Spacek and Jones dig deep and deliver acting gold. Highly recommended.

The performance scenes were horribly annoying. I just couldn't get past them. If old country music is your thing, you may enjoy this, but I really did not.

Very good writing and performances, but started to lose my interest in the second half of the movie. Still, a great movie overall.

Inspiring story, but I don't think the movie has aged well.

No big complaints. Not particularly impressed either.

Sissy Spacek is phenomenal and Tommy Lee Jones gives possibly his best performance here. The movie's heart and soul lies in the chemistry between these two performers.

Sissy Spacek is great in the lead role in this film. The rest of the cast also do a good job here. The script does not have many surprises but it is still good. Overall I would recommend this movie.

An excellent biopic - you really feel empathy for Lynn, and (I know this is illogical), you feel like you've known her all your life. The acting is superb.

It's a really well grounded film. It seems to be very accurate and I appreciate it's honesty, especially how frank it's willing to be about Jones's flaws. It's got a few issues, mostly in the last third where it seems to drift about with little focus, but it's a reminder of why people want to watch films like this. Michael Apted does a good job here. His documentary background really contributes to the film's aura of scrupulous realism.

I watched this not knowing much about Lynn. But this is a beautiful movie, even if it does frustrate me to watch (because of the awful boyfriend and misogyny). It's not a movie I'd watch again, but I'm glad I watched it. I just felt very uncomfortable for the majority of it, which was most likely the intention.

Felt more like a documentary than a biopic, so realistic were the performances. But, not being a fan of the music, or growing up rural, I don't think her life story was all that interesting.

Perhaps more insipid than the music.
