Take the premise of Equilibrium, the dynamic of Romeo and Juliet, and the tension (and colour palette) of white paint drying and you've got Equals. Too many close-ups and inane conversations whispered make this a dull film. The premise is squandered in favour of an uninspired "love" story, and the ending is banal beyond belief. Single word ideas do not make for a well-thought out world. Great if you're having trouble sleeping.

Equilibrium is one of my all-time favorite movies. I also am an avid fan of romance. But here those two find themselves in a poor mix.

I agree its a little derivative and bland (its easy to list off the films that went into the blender), but the scene of the protagonists first secretely finding intimacy with each other is kinda touching.

Just really bad. It's amazing how they could make Kristen Stewart look so unappealing.

If 1984 and Romeo and Juliet had a baby and the baby had a happy ending, Equals would be that baby. Competently made, but it's a dreary ride through well-trodden ground; and said ride sports a derivative, paper-thin world riddled with holes. Equals is a pale shadow. It takes things that have already been covered with more subtlety and depth elsewhere and glues them tidily to its nose. Also... that’s not a bumblebee.

the peaceful tranquility and complex simplicity just made me enjoy all of it.

Not bad but I feel like my time was wasted. The performance of 'painful longing' was quite well done by Stewart but the rest of the film just doesn't find the right balance or drama.

Wanted to like it, but not much there. Should have been a short film.

Not sure the flimsy premise holds up under the weight of the emotions Doremus was trying to capture. Felt like a Black Mirror episode that overstayed its welcome. Stewart is the best thing about this.

It's hard to believe that something as pure and sincere could be made in Hollywood, which makes mostly disgusting crap. But it happened - this film is a story of a genuine love without stupidity, profanity and stuff like that. If you are searching a film of healthy spirit - that's it, don't miss.

The theme isn't new, and the execution here can be blunt and overly solemn. But Doremus and Parker are onto something about how curiosity about human contact can lead to curiosity about what's outside, beyond the parameters of ego and orgasm. Fanciful? Sure. Familiar? You bet. But watch what emotions Stewart and Hoult, both quietly devastating, manage to express with a simple look or a gesture. Equals is really about possibility in a world gone cold from insisting that things can't change.

so cliche, so unspiring, so dull and so white.... Kristen Stewart who cannot act is the perfect cast for this 2 dimensional role.

I can deal with the fact that Equals is completely unoriginal. What I couldn't deal with is how dull it is.

In a future world where emotions are repressed by conditioning and regarded as a disease when they do appear, a young couple (Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart) fall in forbidden love. There aren't many surprises in this little dystopian drama, but given what was likely a low budget, it realizes its world well, and this coupled with a fine score and decent performances makes it a reasonably rewarding watch, although the pace is decidedly trying in spots.

A simple SF, but tucked beneath this simplicity there's a complex human process that everyone will face once anyway.

Plot-wise this is the same "Futuristic Youngsters in Forbidden Love On the Run from Totalitarian Oppressors in a Sterile World That's Only White and Sometimes Blue" SF tale that's been told on film for the past 50 years. Some cool plot elements, though. And Kristen Stewart's performance is so intense it almost tears the screen in half. I'm not kidding about that Kristen Stewart part.

It's probably not gonna bear much fruit for us to put on our Smart Guy Glasses and analyze this one in-depth as it largely a performance based mood piece. Although, the sparsity of its exposition on ideas about authoritarianism and productivity does provide some food for thought. Where Christopher Nolan (God bless him) would spend two pages of dialogue explaining one of his world's concepts to us, Equals does it through single words: inhibitor, insemination; rocket, bomb.

Themes reminiscent of "Gattaca", except the whole affair is MUCH less interesting. With all the white decor and white clothing (not to mention the banning sex and pregnancy thing), I felt as if were watching "THX 1138" all over again... once again, with only a tiny fraction of the interest. Hint to the movie-makers: when you remove human emotions from the mix, you remove at least 98% of any interest the flick could have possibly had.
