Melies certainly has a fantastic imagination. Hilarious short, although not quite as good as A Trip to the Moon.

The editing is impressive, but it's the genuine comedy that makes it special.

Almost everything else from the period seems to be people filming other people walking around. More evidence that Méliès was light years ahead of everyone else making films at the time.

It's a fun short but it's a bit long for a one trick short.

This is genuinely funny stuff. I can only imagine what a 1901 audience must've thought when they saw that disembodied head. Méliès must've had some hilarious conversations with people who were at a complete loss about how the hell he accomplished this.

Not only are the effects great for their time, this also has an original premise and a great payoff at the end. One of the best films I've seen from this period.

He already did something like that on "Four Heads Better Than One", in 1898.

Gives a whole new meaning to 'getting a big head'. The premise should have delivered a funnier film than is presented, perhaps Méliès was just having an off day (it needed more manic energy).

Experiments with disembodied heads and perspective this time. Méliès was leagues ahead of the competition. Great ending too!

Legitimately funny. It's a bit ridiculous how much better Méliès was than any other turn-of-the-century filmmaker.

Early version of SCANNERS. Méliès undoubtedly paved the way for the Hollywood dream factory, not despite but because his cinema is so consciously constructed with the idea of being a magically entertaining diversion.
