Disney with gore. One of Cannes' oddly overpraised films this year.

For those who felt that 1993's Homeward Bound didn't have enough murder, this film is for you. While the allegories are clear, White God is literally 90 minutes of feeling sad for a dog, followed by 30 minutes of silliness. In the end, the dominant, abusive race gets what's coming to them, which doesn't turn out to be as satisfying as it could have been. Still, the first two acts are done well enough that I was fairly entertained.

The plot itself is not that bad - except for the eco-horror phase at the end - but...everything else...is. Bad. And cheap. Often times laughably so. I mean, that dog fight...come on...:D
The only thing, which was really awesome, was the use of music in the club scene. And the ending actually worked for me.
I really don't understand the hype. There's way better B-movies than this (with way better editing :D). (Eco-)horror or not.

Who is this for? Killer dogs cancel out cute dogs. The magical power of classical music cancels out the raw power of social unrest. The melodrama turns on ideas that used to trouble us as kids in Disney films, and that we now reject for shamelessness. Oh, and suddenly it's a horror film. Such a turd.

Really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really silly. Perhaps the single silliest films I've ever seen, and not really in a good. way. Did I mention it's silly?

Set to the pulsating rhythms of Liszt's exuberant Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, White God touches a rare nerve with its often brilliant depiction of oppression and superiority seen through the eyes of man's best friend. I wanted to adopt every dog in this movie. Rise of the planet of the dogs.

Can’t fathom why this holds such critical acclaim. Basic storyline and the dog dialogue is awful, they really don’t whine that much all the time.

Watching this was ordeal for me. Angry father, angry conductor, angry persona almost everywhere... Pretty ill, disturbing movie. The positive side is that according to end titles lots of dogs found new families for real. This is one of the movies which I do not want to watch never ever again.

I didn't like any of the human characters including Lili and a lot of the scenes during the first half involving the dogs were hard to watch.

Adeta modern bir 'The Birds' e dönüşüyor.

O filme traz toda uma mensagem cheia de simbolismos sobre a crueldade humana em relação aos animais e ao próximo. Mas essa mensagem se dilui e fica rasa em duas horas intermináveis.

Probably a new milestone in dog directing, but apart from the very cinematic scenes with the big dog crowds, this was a very tedious movie.

Very well made, with some astonishing "how did they do that?" moments, but dog distress ranks just below child distress as something I'm really not able to sit through anymore at the movies. I had to fast-forward more than once. Also, this is maybe a little too whimsical for my taste. Way, WAY more admirable than enjoyable, that's for sure.

Created with great set/stunt pieces and filmed in an almost documentarian style, White God has all the trappings to make it a solid fantasy film for adults. As some reviews have already said, the film largely echoes Spartacus, but unfortunately its elements involving humans are often paper thin and dull. The film tries to moralize far too much and portray itself as too many things, and falters due to these issues. The simulated animal violence is hard to watch too...

Before seeing White God I had heard it described as "Jason Bourne with dogs." That is a pretty apt description. I'm not sure what the deeper meaning of the film is, if there is one. But it has remarkable craftsmanship and plays out in an interesting way, changing from a social drama into a revenge flick for the animal kingdom.

Homeward Bound remade as a Hungarian art movie. Often too much like a movie for teens, the deeper meaning of it left me guesing, is it about racism? is ir about class strugle? or is it just about lost, mistreated dog who just had enough of shitty dog life? Surprisingly well made film too, for example big shots of post-dog-apocalyptic city aren't less impressive than those Hollywood produced CGI-landscapes.

Like an unholy bastard of "My Life As A Dog", "Homeward Bound" and "28 Days Later", set against the backdrop of once-again rising fascism. Not exactly subtle about what happens once you decide the weakest members of society don't count, but then again... The stalking serial killer dog antics almost get too much, but then you get those shots of hundreds of dogs running through an empty Budapest and 's all good.

Lili (Zsofia Psotta) is forced to put her beloved dog Hagen on the streets of Budapest, and as she negotiates a troubled adolescence, he must contend with human evil--including being forced into fighting his fellow canines to the death--before leading an uprising which Lili must quell. There are some marvelous sequences, and the dog training on display is nothing short of astounding, but it alienates one with its intensely unpleasant human characters, and Psotta is troublingly sexualized.

A poignant, distressing, and difficult watch, White God is the type of movie that doesn't leave your mind for a long time after you see it. Its depictions of abuse, its heartbreaking story, and its strong acting help make it a powerful film. It's tough to take seriously once the "canine uprising" scenes begin, and its finale is a touch anticlimactic, but that doesn't make its themes less touching or the movie as a whole not worth watching. White God is a great movie.
