Perhaps an ambitious creator could take Gaiman’s world and not merely try to replicate it but build on it. Sadly, that wasn’t meant to be. Instead we get this hollow replica of the original books. Horror elements don't feel horrific and dreamlike elements look like a bad episode of doctor Who. I don't care about woke or colourblind casting what I care about was a dark new vision of Sandman, which this wasn't.

[Season 1] First half is refreshing with its' contained fetch quest episodes mixed with the mythic worldbuilding. This culminates in the absolute two best episodes of the show, episode 5 and particularly 6, which is up there with Arcane as some of Netflix's best stuff. Quality drops instantly with the Doll House arc, even with a great villain in the Corinthian. The cinematography+CGI fluctuates in quality but I was generally impressed. Sturridge is fine but could easily see someone do it better.

This is a 7.5/10 show with a couple of 10/10 episodes. Front half of the show is better than the back half and the Death episode is brilliant.

Holbrook as The Corinthian is fantastic, Sturridge is fine but not great (he plays Dream as too sympathetic, and from memory shouldn't he be in shadows half the time?), Patton Oswalt is the worst thing about this by a mile. This kind of gets the visuals & tone right in parts in the beginning but both get cheesier after the Dee/Death episodes (notably the convention "climax" is very disappointing). American Gods S1 is still the best Gaiman adaptation by far.

Episodes vary in quality, with 4-6 being my favorites. The CGI was… not great, and Morpheus/Dream doesn’t have enough personality for us to care about him. It has potential if it gets a second season, but needs to be more consistent.

Delightful. Very few conversions from book to screen satisfy me but this was delicious from beginning to end. My sole nitpick is that I was really looking forward to seeing the "eternal waking" scene with Burgess and it was switched to a disappointingly detail-less "eternal sleeping". The horror of the comic curse would have been wonderful to see. However that is a MINOR loss in comparison with all the good. I look forward to season 2!

An up and down start. It has some real mediocre moments and pacing problems. It needs to figure out what it wants to be, or blend the elements more deftly. I want to see more though, as having read the comic, I know what these stories are capable of.

There are not many who do grown-up fairytales well, but this is quality tv: episodes 5 and 6 particularly stand out (the diner episode is awesome!). Could do without the light-relief forced exposition side-kick, but overall, just fantastic.

I only finished half of S1. It reminded me a lot of American Gods, another series involving myths that I really did not like. On the other hand, watching this was akin to doing a couple of no-stakes fetch quests you might find in a goth/vampire-themed RPG. It was very dark, very boring and, perhaps ironically, made me very sleepy.

Had been very looking forward to it as the nerd that I am, but even though it is faithful to the comics visually (that aspect ratio iz terrible tho), it completely misses the horror moments - the Cereal convention, the Corinthian, the diner, etc. Episode 6 is quite excellent though and Kirby Howell-Baptiste is a perfect Death. It's also a *very* queer show, which I can never hate.

Looked good but I can't get over the cringe. The main character's appearance, demeanor, etc. straight up pisses me off for some reason I can't explain so it didn't help. Some cool moments, but I might just be getting too old for that type of show.

It's okay. The lead was kinda boring, but there were interesting characters and visuals, and a creative plot going for it.

Some great episodes, some episodes that aren't quite as great, but overall the visuals and acting are strong throughout, and the concept is really interesting.

Seems like a decent go at televising the start of the comic, but of course it’s never going to be able to replicate that experience so hopefully it does some more interesting things with the later seasons.

The first few episodes do a lot of heavy lifting. The rest is carried more by the concept than by its substance.

Intriguing premise with the Endless. Some arcs are better than others, but overall well done. Now I'm going to have to check out the graphic novels.

Interesting esthetic and a lot of high-fantasy potential, but squandered by haphazard storytelling. The Vortex being a prime example. Only being introduced right before the end at the climax of season 1, we abandon characters and existing storylines to answer introduced questions. When your protagonist is bored - your audience is likely to follow. If you have to have a recap in the middle of the finale... you've failed to make an impact. The whole series is a synecdoche of ambiguity.

It is a shame when work of this magnitude, this level of imagination, and such a wonderful writing as was the Sandman comics series gets this sort of treatment. I had a lot of hopes for this one, but sadly it suffered from the same thing most modern shows suffer from: a feeble, clumsy script by inept, chickenshit writers. So boring that I didn't even care to watch the final episode. My only regret is watching it in a first place.

It doesn't always land for me but the some of the felicity of the comic book does come through sometimes.

100 for the first episode, 70 up until the intro of Death (a lot of annoying strobing & ghoulish bloodshed a la GoT, and not thrilled about the casting of Patton Oswalt, but otherwise well done). 40 upon the introduction of Death, who was always a favorite character, is now no longer goth, is pretty rude to Dream, and doesn’t seem to be a very good actress—also, the bizarre sexual tension with her brother & the way they act together is unsettling and nothing to do with the comic. Disappointing.

As a huge fan of the comic (arguably my all time favourite graphic novel), I've both been dreaming about and dreading a potential adaptation for the better part of two decades, so now that it's finally here, I'm unsurprisingly a bit divided, but I do think they've found the right episodic structure to it, and hopefully (as the story get wilder in the coming chapters) we'll see a bit more playfulness and love in the execution.

As I'm not familiar with the source material I can't assess how well it has been adapted, however assessing the series on it's own merits, I found a mostly enjoyable epic saga that is darker than most TV fantasy fare but one that only flirts with the horror genre of which I'd have loved to see it embrace more fully. I was glad to see it wasn't a single main story arc but effectively two within the overall world the series has done well to establish. I'd definitely watch another season.

Scant Action with 90% Padding, Consisting Mostly of Static Shots of People Talking, and Occasional Fantastical Imagery: the TV Show. It's a live-action anime, which would have worked much better as animation. I liked the C-story with the dragon but those were the only five minutes in the entire season to make me feel anything. Miscast Patton Oswald annoys as a talking crow. The lead's hair is stupid. The comic it's based on is scary? This is merely vaguely gothic rather than horrific. Bad.

It started off strong, fell off slightly but finished very well. The Rose arc was pretty different from the rest of the season, which I didn't enjoy too much. I absolutely loved Sturridge as Dream and Holbrook as The Corinthian. I'm not familiar with the comic but I am excited to see more of this.

With a very disappointing start, completely failing to deliver on the horror part, the more Dr. Who-like episodes 5 and 6 are simply brilliant. This is troubling, because they can be considered the filler episodes. Howell-Baptiste is great as Death, lovely. Coleman was missing the Dr. Who snappy dialogues. Lucifer is just a waste of time. Samunyai did a great job. And why does Patton Oswalt have to fuck up everything remotely interesting?
