"I read a summary and thought it was made recently then when I started watching it I thought it was old and then when I had been watching it for a while I reconsidered and thought it maybe was made recently" or "The greatest portrayal of an artist put on film."

Dick Miller has always looked middle aged. Way too much sax. Glad this was just over an hour, but if a movie came out today at just over an hour I would revolt. I have layers like art or whatever

This is closer to an indie film or an underground movie than a classic 1950's Hollywood picture. Tonally it's an extended Twilight Zone episode; with a macabre premise that leads to a dark conclusion. Cinematically it's best when the jokes and horror play hand in hand--often in one shot. And satirically it works as it shows how frequently a subculture finds profoundness out of someone who's really a fraud. Still, the rushed ending and dated aspects give it a marginal recommendation.

As a viewing experience it's lean and flowing and entertaining to watch, if a bit slight and generally ridiculous. But underlying the somewhat exploitative horror comedy is a potent allegory about social reception of and expectations from art. It's significant that the director of this little movie that's more ambitious that it looks, went on to become the producer patriarch of New Hollywood.

A great bit of macabre humour that pokes fun at art culture along the way. Yeah, it's a little slight, but it's rather short and fills out its running time very well.

The whole beatnik thing is utterly laughable, as intended, yet this movie is horribly stupid anyway. I could have probably enjoyed this movie if I were under the influence of copious amounts of liquor.

Mildly amusing. Feels like a rather silly episode of Twilight Zone.

Corman does a great job with the low budget with a clever premise, good pacing, and some nice macabre humor.

A neat relic from the beatnik age. Like all of Corman's best, it's got dark humor, low-budget cheesy charm, and a lovable put-upon protagonist.

Although the idea of putting corpses into wax or clay as art has been done before, I liked this movie. I liked the main characters, mainly Dick Miller's character. This movie is also humorous in a black comedy sort of way. I recommend seeing this movie.

A silly but enjoyable film from Roger Corman which nonetheless takes swipes at the perception of art and alternative beat culture at the time with some panache and wit.

A failed attempt to mock Beatniks. Mostly boring and only intermittently funny. However Ed Nelson does look cool in a cowboy hat, but unfortunately Dick Miller does come across in this as a poor man's Jack Lemon (with some pale flashes of Jerry Lewis thrown in).
