This story is quite underrated since it is not "funny". More serious Pixar work. Animation and mood (excluding circus scene) is brillaint. Look at rendering in the price tag and do not forget the time it was made!

Pretty depressing for a Pixar short. The animation is still brilliant, though.

Sure, that clown is downright creepy and will haunt you in your sleep, but the story and jazzy soundtrack just hit me with unexpected poignancy. Perhaps the saddest of all Pixar shorts.

The clown as a person is still weird in terms of animation, but the story is heart-breaking. Red is almost as cute as Luxo Jr.!

Another simple outing from a still growing Pixar, but there is real heart here.

Kind of interesting, but ultimately not very fulfilling and the animation really shows its age.

The city scenes are very impressive for 1987. So is the animation of the unicycle moving and juggling balls. But when it comes to the clown, everything falls apart, both the animation, rendering, and design. It looks worse than the humanoid "André" figure in the 1984 short.

The Unicycle's dream has some great music. Red's Dream is about a unicycle named Red, that's alone in the corner with a 50% off tag on him. He dreams of bigger things though, like performing with creepy clowns with lumpy faces...

A step back for the Pixar team. Again, their early shorts are as much a technical demonstration as they are a storytelling device, but here the narrative has a bit more room to flow - and again inanimate objects are given a great sense of personality. Unfortunately, utterly grating sound design and some poor choices in art direction lessen the impact.

Other than the lighting, it seems a huge step backward from Pixar's first short. The story is boring and the mood is too solemn for animation. The clown looks especially bad. "Lumpy" they call him.

If there's anything worse than Pixar it's Pixar before they figured out how to do pleasant-looking 3d animation.
